He fought in the civil war, right?" -2nd grader The start to a fabulous conversation with 1st-3rd graders, pushing me in my peace ed skills to translate stories of rights, privilege, oppression, nonviolence, and standing for your beliefs to such youngsters. Making a point to do so without dumbing it down, losing the nuance, or pretending that "we won" and such battles are a thing of the past (as I critique mainstream schooling of doing so often). Later, the 3rd grader's did an oceanography lesson on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and we had an amazing discussion on the injustice of plastic, then brainstormed potential solutions ranging from art installations and buying less to one kid vowing to shut down plastic factories when he grows up. As we split into individual work afterwards, two kids decided to research the pros and cons of shooting garbage into space while the other three and I watched a video of that bad ass Native American hip hop artist teenager Xiuhtezcatl Martinez who raps about eco justice. Finally, in the closing class meeting I got to bring it back to MLK Jr. with a reminder that today we are also fighting for the rights of nature and the more than human creatures of our planet.
