This isn't much of an ask, but I just wanted to say that I appreciate the way you're handling this blog. The posts are very well researched, and it's always cool to see the background information of things. Just a potential idea if you're interested. Once all the Hearthians have been discussed, it could be neat to talk about some of the geology behind the planets. I know they're a bit fantastical, like Brittle Hollow having a black hole in the center, but things like the surface rock structures and Ember Twin's caves could make for an interesting discussion.
Heya, inkarchivist!
Firstly, thank you so much!! We knew from the start that we wanted to post quality content here, and we put a lot of research into all of our posts, from fact-checking to exploring entirely new concepts to us! We really wanted to make something fun, educational, and accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike, and it’s always so encouraging to hear that folks are enjoying our little corner of tumblr!
You’ll be happy to know that surveying the planets of Outer Wilds is our main goal with this blog! We’ve completed surveys in-game (boots on the ground, field notebooks, and all!) for Timber Hearth, the Attlerock, and the Hourglass Twins so far, with some preliminary work on Brittle Hollow and Giant’s Deep. We aim to explore the whole solar system (and beyond) and use real-world geology to justify what we observe as best as we can. If it’s geology, we’re doing a write-up on it, and we’re not shying away from what seems impossible from an Earth perspective - and yes, that includes floating islands and black hole planets!
Since these posts are a little longer and more in-depth than what we’ve been doing so far (Timber Hearth alone is currently looking to be at least 7 separate posts!), and we want to draw some nice figures to go along with them, they are taking a bit more time to put together. We hope to start posting our main findings soon, though we’re both adjusting to changing schedules right now which slows us down a little haha.
In the meantime, we’re glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the Hearthian Highlights! If you haven’t already, feel free to check out our palaeoecological reconstruction of the Ember Twin lakebed we did for the 2025 Outer Wilds Events Science & History Fair, or our introductory livestream, where we went through how we survey the game!
Thanks again for the ask, we'll catch you in the next loop! The OWGS Team
