what was mattie's first change like?

mattie’s first change was terrifying . not because he didn’t know it was going to happen , because he did , he knew he was of the age that his first shift would come and that it was only a matter of time … but because when he started feeling it come over him , he couldn’t find his dad . the shift is painful , your bones are breaking , your muscles tearing and mending , his entire body is breaking apart only to be reconstructed as something it’s never been before . he knew it would hurt , he just didn’t know how badly it was going to until it was already upon him .
mattie when he first started to feel the change , like his arms and legs were falling asleep , his skin prickling and hair on the back of his neck standing on end , didn’t register at first what was going on . it honestly slipped his mind that afternoon that the change was even a possibility , until he walked through the front door of his & his dad’s house on pack property . it was when he crossed the foyer of the house that annoyance , irritation , and even mild pain turned to spikes of agony that started in his fingers and his toes , spreading up his arms and legs , to his jaw and stomach . he clutched the door frame , and he called out for his dad , but his dad wasn’t there .
mattie went through the beginning portion of his change alone , but i have to think that SOMEONE heard him writhing and crying in pain . someone like russ who wasn’t alpha yet , and talked him through it , even when he couldn’t hear them anymore over the sound of his bones breaking and his heart pounding .
his first shift was a nightmare , most peoples shifts are , but it’s because his dad wasn’t there , and really fuckin’ let him down being the most absent parent ever 2k18 , that made it as worse as it felt , because he was scared and he didn’t even have his dad there as some kind of support to help him through it .
