Innovator16 by XP-pen - first thoughts

I've had about an hour to try it before work so I don't have it completely set up yet but this is about first thoughts.

Before this, I've been using genius mouse pen and a tv for monitor. The tablet had about 1k pressure levels and the tv had either oversaturated and too much contrast or no saturation and contrast.

I ordered my first screen tablet display on 1st of december. It has been shipped on 3rd of december and was supposed to arrive between 6 and 20 days. It arrived on 22nd of december, which is really good regarding the christmas madness.

When i first got it out of the box, it struck me how big the tablet actually is. Its size is 443x256 mm, which didn't sound as much when i was buying it. I thought 16 inch tablet might be too small but its pretty good.

Setup was pretty easy, driver is downloaded straight from the shop page.

Performance

Innovator 16 has full HD resolution and the screen looks a bit blurry which is a bit annoying to be worked with. If I need to, I just look at my laptop. Most 22 inch tablets from XP-pen also have full hd resolution so I think it would be even worse.

Colors on this are just fantastic and quite good straight from the package. I didn't need to adjust it very much, just by few percents.

The pen work is just magnificent. Its light and falls into the hand just right. It could be a bit longer but it still isn't too short. I saw on some reviews an issue with fast strokes but I haven't encountered any.

Etc

Let me just say - the glove and micro fiber is a sensory hell. I have dry hands from the cold and work so its even worse. And i have bigger hands than the standart (I wear 8 to 9 inch gloves) so the gloves seam goes under my nails. Fortunately, its possible to work without the glove (not sure about long time work).

My neck started hurting after just 30 minutes of work because of how low the stand is. Some people put stuff under it to make the viewing angle better but I just bought AC 18 stand today.

Verdict

The tablet is amazing. The only thing I would change is the resolution or at least an opinion to adjust sharpness. But for the price - its amazing.

So @XPPen sent me their new pen display tablet to review! It’s the new Innovator 16 (https://xp-pen.com/product/638.html) with a 15.6 inch display.

First off my only regular use of this type of drawing on display is my 12.9 ipad for travel and the occasional go on a cintiq or yiynova in the past so im no expert with pen displays, I work with a wacom intuos pro on the daily.

image above shows everything they include in the box, they include a power block (and every converter) but if you have the USB space you can run it purely off your pc (2 USB and 1 HDMI port) which was so smooth and lass faffy then needing another plug. 

side note i love the travel pen holder w/ nibs, it sucks when my pen gets dusty when i chuck it in a pencil case to travel.

The screen is really nice to work with its a 1920 x 1080 pixel size with a screen 13”9 x 7”10 with makes the ppi just over 140 which didn't make me feel like I could see every single pixel on the screen. I also liked the physical size, it didn't cramp my desk nor my drawing, my UI wasn’t 5 miles across the desk. They have actual stats about the colour profile on the product page but all i can say is the colours were loooooovveellyyyyy on my eyeballs.

The tooth on the screen is great, v similar to a paper texture ipad cover, the wheel supports two settings (one on the black (virtual), one on the outer silver (mechanical) and the buttons have notches and size differences to tell them apart under your fingers. (I dont use hotkeys on tablets, too many buttons to map and my intuos's are all taped up bc i kept spilling hot drinks on them while i worked, which i ALSO accidently did with this xp pen tablet with coffee and it survived!)

next thing is the size, this thing is /THIN/ its 9mm wide yet feels super solid and that's what really struck me when i first lifted it out of the box. I'm on Win 7 (I KNOW) Clip Studio and installation was a dream I just plugged it in to my pc, downloaded & installed the drivers, restarted once and I was good to go. (they said you should remove all other drivers before you install theirs but i forgot to uninstall wacom’s and it was fine, its unfortunately incompatible with wacom’s and you cant have pen pressure on both only the xp-pen when both are installed)

There's slightly more parallax on this than the ipad but wayyy less than older display tablets that i've used and it didnt get in the way of my drawing, also no lag that affected my drawing.

main con for me is the lightest pen pressure, it doesn't pick up the pen when you drag it across the surface of the screen using only its own weight pushing down unlike my intuos, this did affect my sketching since I work very lightly. (i'm only using the stand they provided here)   (Video link to example of what i mean)

If you add a little bit of pressure it picks it up fine but it gave me the feeling like my pen was skipping the beginning of my strokes. The pen is a little lighter than the wacom one and this almost felt like it might be solved with a heavier pen? I got more used to this as I drew with it over the day and didn't affect my painting and it’s def something you could get used to over time.

I spent all day with it yesterday and rigged a somewhat ergonomic stand with the one they give you which is sturdy and travelable but not a good angle or height for long period of drawing (oh for the day tablet producers ship their products with good stands) I worked on it for about 8 hours and it never got hot.

Overall I'm really impressed with the tablet, it eliminates a lot of my past gripes with pen displays and I think if you like working with them, it's currently £449 ($499) in their stores which i think is great bang for your buck with this.

XP-PEN Innovator 16 Review

I got to test and review @xppentablet​’s newest screen tablet, the Innovator 16! This is a brief overview of the tablet but overall, I really like it! This tablet goes for 500USD (freeshipping and duties - approx. $25 for Canada) and I was really pleased with it!

I was super impressed with it. I’m used to Cintiqs and other Wacom products, so I was honestly skeptical. But honestly it’s a lovely tablet and a great alternative to WACOM for basically half the price. XP-Pen was really great!

Here is the contents of the box! It comes with a fold out stand, gloves, and multiple international outlet adapters.

You can see the difference with the XP-Pen pen vs. The Wacom Pen! It doesn’t have an eraser, but it’s still got customizable buttons and it’s a bit sleeker.

Here’s a quick summary of the pros and cons below! I’ll try to be concise and as helpful as possible.

PROS

Interface is GREAT

works just as well as cintiq!! seriously!!!

smooth drawing experience

customizable pen buttons and tablet buttons

overall very high quality and similar in feeling as drawing on a cintiq!

comes with stand, multiple intl’ outlet adapters, hdmi input, and glove

sleek, lightweight and super portable

GREAT COLOUR MATCHING!! WOW!! super sexy.

really responsive and helpful overseas tech support (via email)

CONS

the driver is heavier than a Wacom tablet - it MAY slow down a computer that was slow to begin with

you absolutely CANNOT have another tablet driver present (like Wacom) on your computer - the two drivers will clash with each other and cause LOTS OF LAG

the solution to this is to clear off whatever driver was on your computer before switching to XP-Pen. Then, it should work just fine :)

Because of this, it is not ideal to switch between XP-PEN and nother tablet brand regularly!!

Also, the tilt features on this tablet are about 30% less sensitive than Wacom. So, if you have tilt-sensitive brushes, you will need to adjust them accordingly! But it still works!

I experienced some brief spats of lag when I had a lot of things open, but my computer is pretty slow to begin with so.

OVERALL! THAT’S A QUICK SUMMARY!!

 I can only speak for myself and my own experience, but overall I had a very positive experience using the Innovator 16! No, I was not paid to say this. I hope this was helpful overall! I would like to just spread word of accessible alternatives for artists. I use a Macbook Pro 15 and primarily draw in CSP. I cannot speak for how the tablet may handle a program such as AnimateCC or Toonboom.
