XP-PEN Innovator 16 Review

I got to test and review @xppentablet​’s newest screen tablet, the Innovator 16! This is a brief overview of the tablet but overall, I really like it! This tablet goes for 500USD (freeshipping and duties - approx. $25 for Canada) and I was really pleased with it!

I was super impressed with it. I’m used to Cintiqs and other Wacom products, so I was honestly skeptical. But honestly it’s a lovely tablet and a great alternative to WACOM for basically half the price. XP-Pen was really great!

Here is the contents of the box! It comes with a fold out stand, gloves, and multiple international outlet adapters.

You can see the difference with the XP-Pen pen vs. The Wacom Pen! It doesn’t have an eraser, but it’s still got customizable buttons and it’s a bit sleeker.

Here’s a quick summary of the pros and cons below! I’ll try to be concise and as helpful as possible.

PROS

Interface is GREAT

works just as well as cintiq!! seriously!!!

smooth drawing experience

customizable pen buttons and tablet buttons

overall very high quality and similar in feeling as drawing on a cintiq!

comes with stand, multiple intl’ outlet adapters, hdmi input, and glove

sleek, lightweight and super portable

GREAT COLOUR MATCHING!! WOW!! super sexy.

really responsive and helpful overseas tech support (via email)

CONS

the driver is heavier than a Wacom tablet - it MAY slow down a computer that was slow to begin with

you absolutely CANNOT have another tablet driver present (like Wacom) on your computer - the two drivers will clash with each other and cause LOTS OF LAG

the solution to this is to clear off whatever driver was on your computer before switching to XP-Pen. Then, it should work just fine :)

Because of this, it is not ideal to switch between XP-PEN and nother tablet brand regularly!!

Also, the tilt features on this tablet are about 30% less sensitive than Wacom. So, if you have tilt-sensitive brushes, you will need to adjust them accordingly! But it still works!

I experienced some brief spats of lag when I had a lot of things open, but my computer is pretty slow to begin with so.

OVERALL! THAT’S A QUICK SUMMARY!!

 I can only speak for myself and my own experience, but overall I had a very positive experience using the Innovator 16! No, I was not paid to say this. I hope this was helpful overall! I would like to just spread word of accessible alternatives for artists. I use a Macbook Pro 15 and primarily draw in CSP. I cannot speak for how the tablet may handle a program such as AnimateCC or Toonboom.

Been working on this for a good couple hours and its finally done~

I redrew a scene from Inuyasha with Kikumi and Youta. Hopefully I did well, I tried to mimic old 90′s screen effects for it to make up the fact I’m not too skilled with backgrounds.

Affordable Graphics Tablet

Hey guys! Recently I was interested if I could actually use a graphic tablet (instead of my usual display tablet) SO I bought the XP-PEN Deco02. I had never used this brand before, and I haven’t used a graphic tablet since 2015 -- before I gave up after using it twice because it was “too hard” -- but now that I have a lot more resolve and skill, I decided it was time to try something new.

I wanted to share my experience with this tablet to help any one else who is interested in it.

I ordered the tablet on Amazon, got it the very next day. The box came with everything you’d expect: the tablet itself; the nice battery-free pen (with an eraser at the end!); pen-holder tube with extra nibs and a nib remover; a nice two-fingered glove to draw with (very essential if you like to keep your tablet smudge-free); and of course all the info you’ll need to start up your tablet.

The installation was super straightforward, which I appreciate. I was drawing instantly after installing the driver, and didn’t even need to calibrate the pen. The customization of all the tablet’s features -- the pen pressure, the 6 hot keys with the lovely silent roller-ring in the middle (my favorite), as well as the side button on the pen -- is nearly endless. I could get the thin, light strokes if I applied soft pressure, and super thick, heavy lines when I wanted them, just like the real pen-to-paper drawing experience.

The Deco02 is very lightweight and thin, perfect for drawing on-the-go, or even for people who like minimally invasive drawing tablets. The drawing area is great -- not too big to the point where I’d get lost with my pen strokes, and it isn’t too small to where my hand/wrist would be cramping having to bend over a small work area. I was able to use Clip Studio Paint in it, just like I would with my other tablet, and it works in MediBang, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other programs just as well.

Over all, I am thrilled with this graphics tablet and the support team from XP-Pen is amazing and always helpful. This tablet is under $80 -- with the level of professional quality and ease of drawing, you can’t do much better than that. I definitely look forward to drawing on it more.

I included a drawing that I did on the Deco02 as well so you can see that it do anything a monitor tablet could do.

The glory of this picture is that not only are there basically four monitors - without having to do anything fancy with the graphic card - but that the little one in front is an XP-PEN tablet that already came with Linux support!!!! I've stayed up way too late a couple of nights in a row reconnecting with my twisted little gremlin artist soul.

Adding to my repertoire

I may have just royally screwed up my flow, or maybe I'm about to unlock untold levels of productivity to my life, but I just bought an XP-Pen tablet (13.3 inch). It will be here tomorrow. (And I got an extra drawing glove with a cute print on it to tell it from @roux36prod's).

I did the almost-minimal amount of research before picking it out. The most important part for me is that it comes with Linux drivers from the manufacturer, so support is solid.

I'm working on a not-too-secret project. My default for making reference sketches for the artist is to use paper and pencil, but then one of the concept pieces came back showing the wrong elements, and I realized that my messy lines and very-rough-sketch method was probably going to make this project take much longer than it should. (I still get way ahead of myself and forget things like erasing guidelines.)

I mean, I'm still going to use paper for a while because there will be a learning curve to get used to the tablet (or maybe I'll take to it like a duck to water, I don't know yet) and I don't want to slow down production. Still, adaptability is the core of professional resilience, and even though I might technically qualify as an "old fogey" - I was definitely not born in the digital age - I like to think that I learn new tricks pretty well.

I might buy an XP-Pen tablet with a screen. Do any of you have experience with the brand? I heard they're pretty good but cheap, which would be perfect. Is it better than Wacom...?
