In need of Refueling, Chapter 21 - Weirder
Summary: “You?! Why would I trust you? You have brought me nothing but failure. Time and time again; nothing but disappointment!”
His father’s words might have been a result of his possession by the White Bone Spirit, but whether or not they were his true thoughts, Red Son vows to prove them wrong. To do so he seeks to attain a power strong enough to destroy his father’s immortal enemy. After all, he’d much rather throw fire at his problems.
Word Count: 2263
Ratings/Warnings: Teen and up; injury, burns, angst and hurt/comfort, toxic thoughts caused by toxic parents, panic attacks, abuse
Notes: More Mei! WOO!
Credits: Big thanks to @painted-arachnid and @simplyfornardo for helping me bounce ideas off of them. And also thanks to @lemonsqueazie for providing me with “Journey to the West” lore. I don’t know much about the original novel or other iterations, but I still tried to keep some things compliant with the lore. You should check all of them out, since they’re really great content creators with neat ideas!

“You really think Red Son just wants to be a cook?”
MK’s question is valid, but there’s an accusation behind it, as if it is only rhetorical.
Mei fumbles to answer, “I don’t know! I mean, I don’t really know what his dreams and goals are now that he’s apparently working for Pigsy.”
“But that’s what I’m saying! What is he doing here, if it’s not some sort of trick?”
“I get you dude, but it’s been a few weeks now. Red Son would have to be playing the long game if it’s a trick, and that doesn’t really seem like his M.O.,” Mei counters.
MK waves his arms, letting out a groan of exasperation, and his harried appearance causes Mei to backpedal slightly. “It is really weird, I know. I haven’t really gotten used to him being around either,” she says.
MK sighs and hugs himself slightly, “I don’t know if I want to get used to him being around.”

Red Son angrily pushes at the webs binding him. No matter what, they don’t want to give. Wherever they were taken, it doesn't seem to be an actual spider's belly. Though the room is very cavernous, the flooring and walls feel metallic. If he had to guess, they were in some giant spider-shaped mechanism.
Beside him, the Noodle Boy is making a pathetic amount of panicked noises and screams. When Red Son is unable to free himself, he grunts and snaps at the boy beside him, "Stop whining! You're the Monkie Kid! Can't you just break these webs?"
The Noodle Boy seems to find his words finally and with a whine in his voice says, "No, I can't!" His brief fear turns to one of ire as he shoots back at Red Son. "You're a fire demon, can't you just burn the webs away?!"
Good, at least he's pointed his attention at Red Son rather than their current predicament. But he replies with an eye roll, "I told you! I don't have my powers anymore!"
Noodle Boy looks at him rather incredulously, and he opens his mouth to speak, but whatever is about to come out is silenced with a short shriek as the one responsible for all of this enters the room - Spider Queen.
She saunters across the room to them, and greets them with a, "Hello Boys. Welcome to my mobile Arachnoid Base!"
Between trembling lips, the Noodle Boy scowls. "Spider Queen," he says with disdain.
"Monkie Kid!" she says cheerfully "So glad you're here!" She reaches down and grabs a bunch of the webbing covering him to hoist him up. He noticeably shivers as she does so. "Do you like my new webs?" She brings him over to a wall adjacent to some machinery and sticks him to it, using the webs already covering him and some more that she added of her own. "They are imbued with your own essence, so even you can't break through it." As she speaks she spins some more webbing from him to the machinery. "And I've heard around town that your powers are now totally unlocked. Free to be used however you choose..." A dark glint flashes in her eyes. "...or however I choose..."
She pushes some buttons on the machines. As they start up sparks of energy crackle around them. Then the webs connecting the Monkie Kid to the machines start vibrating, almost rippling. Red Son does his best to make out what the machinery is for, but he is shocked out of his musings when a shrieking yell comes from the Noodle Boy. And it's not like the scared whimpers or screams he was emitting earlier. No, this was a scream of immense pain. The webs around the Noodle Boy constrict tighter as bolts of energy dance around them, then flow across the webbing along the walls, leading up to the machines perpendicular to the wall the Monkie Kid is on. The lights within the base glow brighter and the cavernous area is lit up to show intricate machinery, pipes, and lamps all along the space. The lights flicker, then grow even brighter, and the whole mechanism seems to whirr to life. Red Son gets the feeling that the so-called “Arachnoid Base” was running only on basic functions before, but now seems to be fully powered up. The base lurches upward, then forward. A screen appears above the machines showing the outside. The large mobile base starts moving through the city. Crushing buildings and stands in its wake. When it seems like the ripples of energy from the Monkie Kid are lessening, the spider mechanism stops and gathers energy at its mouth, bathing the streets in green light. The energy is released in a blast that chips off the sides of several buildings, leaving an easier path for the giant spider to walk through.
Then the machines slow down their inner workings and the sparks around the Monkie Kid fizzle out, but the lights and the base remain at full power. Noodle Boy's screams also stop and he stays there on the wall panting tiredly.
"Excellent, it worked perfectly!" Spider Queen cheers.
"What... did you do?" Noodle Boy rasps out.
"As I said, my webs are imbued with your essence. Not only does that allow them to keep you confined, but it allows me the power to absorb your energy so I can use it to power both myself and my new base." She turns to Red Son and walks menacingly towards him. "I can even take the energy from other demons and beings of great power..." She reaches out a claw towards Red Son. And cuts off the webs holding him. Red Son stands there stunned and confused. "Of course, I've also heard that you are without your powers. My spiders, throughout the city, tell me much. Such a shame since I thought you'd become even more powerful when I told you where the Samadhi Fire was hidden..."
Red Son blinks. "Wait, you mean you would've just used that energy for the purpose of fueling your base?!" he shouts angrily at the realization.
Spider Queen shrugs. "Hmm-maybe. But the main goal was of course to steal the Monkey King's magic. But then you put the King out of commission so I had to go with the Kid. Either way..." She turns both herself and Red Son around to face Noodle Boy. She puts a clawed leg over the fire demon’s shoulder and squeezes, not comfortingly. "...It was all thanks to you, Red Son, for bringing me his hair to begin with that I was able to create and power this base." She looks pointedly at Noodle Boy. "You see Monkie Kid, it is the hairs from your clones that he provided me that I wove through those very webs."
Red Son's stomach clenches as he looks from Spider Queen and up to Noodle Boy, still tangled in webs. It clenches tighter still when the Noodle Boy stares at him in horror. "What...?" he says darkly, staring at Red Son.
"No! I--" Red Son didn't know what to say. What she said was true after all. "I didn't know--" He really didn't! Did he? But he did know that there couldn't have been any good reason for Spider Queen to want those hairs. He knew well enough that it was likely something that would hurt the Monkie Kid or his mentor. If anything, he just forgot, and just didn't think. Which really didn't make it any better. Purposeful or not, his past actions were again coming back to haunt him. He looks down dejectedly, shamefully. What else was there to say?
"In the end, I do have you to thank. So you are certainly free to go. Though I do leave the option of staying and being my faithful servant. I do need a mechanic to help out with my base..." She eyes Red Son in a way that makes him feel like he's some sort of prey animal.
“I knew you were up to something! I knew it!” The Monkie Kid struggles against the webs and yells out angrily. “After everything that Sandy and Pigsy did for you, you’re still teaming up with Spider Queen! Red Son, how dare you–” With him struggling more, the webs constrict tighter and more energy gets pulled from him, cutting off his rant, and causing more pain.
Red Son steps forward, moved to do something. Anything! But he is held back by the turmoil in his mind. What was he supposed to do? Help the Noodle Boy and stop the Spider Queen with no powers? Even then, would he even accept him? The Monkie Kid already hated him to begin with. He thought he had a chance before, but the event in the noodle shop earlier proved that even the others didn’t trust him fully. After all of this there was no going back. Where else was he to go?
The energy shocks stop and the Monkie Kid is left panting again, but he glares hatefully at Red Son, who feels as if daggers are shooting into his heart. The Spider Queen still rests a leg on his shoulder. Red Son was stuck, literally and metaphorically.
“Well?” Spider Queen asks, the offer to join her still in the air.
Red Son’s voice was caught in his throat, preventing him from answering, even if there was an easy answer to give. But what else could he do? What was the point of trying? A part of him starts to feel almost separate from himself. Mechanically, he opens his mouth and words begin to form without him meaning to. “Spider Queen, I will joi–”
Suddenly an alarm goes off, blaring over his voice. And he snaps out of his trance-like state. What was I about to do?! He slaps a hand over his mouth, as if to prevent the rest of that sentence from coming out.
The giant spider base stops moving forward, and Spider Queen looks up angrily at the monitor to investigate the cause of the alarm. "What's this?" she says.
Red Son, too, turns to the large screen to see that standing in the path of the base, blocking its way…
is Sandy.

<START OF ACT 2>
The world is hazy and hot, as if the heat is distorting the world around him. And yet Red Son feels ice in his heart, reaching out from his center like slowly forming cracks on a frozen lake. He looks up to see his father, looking at him with disappointment. He shakes his head and turns his back to him. Red Son reaches out his hand and calls to his father. He made a mistake, messed everything up, but that doesn’t mean that his father would leave him. Would he? A desperate ache takes hold of his chest and squeezes the words forming in his throat as he tries to call out. The distorted world blurs into something unrecognizable and covers Red Son in darkness.
