Inquiring A Ladybug About A Future Spouse

(There’s a lot of variations of this poem/spell, I chose this one because I deemed it the most fitting. This one’s specifically for finding a male groom hence the word ‘sulhanen’, but there’s many variations for finding a bride as well. I’d say it’s suitable for finding a partner of any gender. [x])

Jos saat leppäkertun kädellesi, kysy siltä: "Lennä, lennä, leppäkerttu, Mistä minä sulhasen saa', Pohjosesta, itästä, Etelästä vai lännestä?" Tuleva puolisosi on siinä suunnassa, mihin leppäkerttu lentää.

If you get a ladybug on your hand, ask it: "Fly, fly, ladybug From where will I get a spouse From north, east, South or west?" Your future spouse is in the direction where the ladybug flies.

Inquiring Your Lifespan From A Cuckoo

Ensi kertaa kun käki kukkuu, siis pitää huutaa: "Kuku, kultanen käkönen, Kuin monta vuotta mie elän!" Siit kuin mont' kertaa se kukahtaa, niin mont' vuotta siit elätkii.

The first time a cuckoo calls, you must shout: "Sing, golden cuckoo, how many years will I live!" And how many times it calls, that's how many years you will live.

Inquiring About the Weather From A Snail

(Very common little poem/spell.) [x]

Otetaan etana käteen ja kysytään siltä: “Etana, etana, näytä sarves, onko huomenna pouta?” Jos etana näyttää sarvensa, huomenna on pouta.

Take a snail in your hand and ask it: “Snail, snail, show your horns, is it dry weather tomorrow?” If the snail shows its horns, it won't rain tomorrow.
