honestly ep. 4 was good. a little teensy bit underwhelming for the lack of becca/cam but reena and her family history was very interesting to learn abt.

reena inviting the other girls over made me feel so bad for her bc jo and kelly were so out of pocket

listen this book is fucking FIRE but unless you know about arab culture and language prior to going into this book, you’ll be very very lost.

i think that’s so interesting though. i wondered why hafsah faizal relied so heavily on arab life, only to not explain it much in the book. before i started this book, i’d see her a lot on tik tok and i liked how she always talked about how hard it is to publishing as a POC. and the fact that she managed to publish such a book is actually pretty groundbreaking, ESPECIALLY since it’s YA fantasy.

there’s a general rule that most writers follow when writing things like this. it’s basically to never explain or give translations for words in different languages. the whole fun of it is for the reader to search it up themselves. i think it’s AMAZING that she never provides translations for the arab words she uses. 

she easily could have made up words, like a lot of fantasy novels so. but she didn’t!!! she made a book that took place in this arab society and she didn’t barely explained it!

that’s why some people didn’t like this book. because it was “confusing.” NO! it just didn’t take place in an english speaking western world (and that’s what modern YA fantasy readers are used to!).

the actual book does not have a glossary for these words, which i’ve seen in SJM’s books. there’s a separate website you have to go to in order to find out what these words even mean. there are easily 50+ words on this site.

so why doesn’t she explain it? why doesn’t she go into a long story about the parallels between this society and arab life hundreds of years ago (even with some parallels in modern arab countries)? and i’ve figured it out: because she doesn’t need to. with a story like this, that’s not her job. it’s not her job to explain every little thing. when people from non english native countries read novels from writers from america or england that write about the western world, you don’t think they’re completely lost because they’re not reading about their norm? they’re SO confused! faizal has relied on her storytelling skills so much that the world building and understanding the world is research the readers should do on their own! like what people from other non english native speaking countries are expected to do.

and when they look up that website, they’re putting in that extra work, and it doesn’t remove them from the experience of reading a fantasy novel. it immerses them even more into it! makes them want to know more about arab society. that is fucking GENIUS!

and she pulled it off! she’s making readers put in the extra work and when they do, the story becomes even MORE enjoyable!

the fact that she PULLED IT OFF is so amazing. i wanna be just like her
