one of the deepest problems with the way fo4 is written is it’s so mortified and self conscious about the possibility of isolating or alienating the player that it assumes you're a part of every stereotypical american societal default, and shapes your experience around that. in assuming its picking the most neutral position, its simultaneously accidentally assuming the american male position. nobody, except people who are unambigiously evil or rude are allowed to genuinely disagree with you and have beef with your actions because it refuses to do anything you disagree with. you cant meaningfully disagree or have any of your companions shun you because then youre shunned. but it makes the world feel so meaningless and flat. it starts to feel isolating, and you inevitably feel alien to a world of cardboard cutout quests that refuse to react beyond just a few lines. in trying to pander to everyone, in trying to offend nobody, it loops back around to offending everybody. the sheer act of refusing to ask the questions obvious to its own story and characters and YOUR perspective in all of that is why characters like x6 end up feeling so underbaked that it feels like the story is always this close to something, but it just cannot pheasibly grab it because its worried it will squeeze you too hard, and for one second, it will make you think a little too much, and you'll be forced to question the things its put in front of you. in this essay i will
