A nest from last year of sorts fell recently (not entirely sure when since I haven't been here in a week and just happened to notice one of the nests fell) not sure if it's a wasps or bees but interesting to see

Okay, so my neighbors left some old bikes (rob cantor reference???) by their dumpster, so my dad and I took 3, hoping that my grandparents could refurbish them during the summer.
Anyways, our primary entrance to our house is actually our side door. There's a weird elevated porch thing that's a platform on stairs, with the stairs poking out of the house but the actual inner area being concave, if that makes sense. It's where we store our shoes. It's semi-open to the outdoors, since there's a curtain between the entrance and the great outdoors.
So we roll the bikes into the driveway, set them somewhere in our backyard, and I'm about to enter the house when I see a big, mosquito-looking thing. I yelp, run out of the weird side door area that I'm just realizing we don't have a name for, and tell my dad. He doesn't see anything and opens the door, but we realized that we accidentally let it into the house.
I run upstairs screaming like a 6-year-old, and my dad sucks it up using a vacuum and releases it outside. I came down, and my dad was like "did that thing come from the hive-looking structures in the weird side-door porch thing?" And my mom was like "What hive-looking structures?" And then we saw some clusters of material that vaguely resembled animal feces if it was light-colored, which definitely looked like insect hives.
My mom did some research, and we think that there are craneflies (like those things from Animal Crossing, I think) nesting there. Thankfully, they don't bite or carry diseases. We probably should've at least sprayed the inside of our side door area with insect repellent (it's been raining a lot this winter, so we're waiting until rainy season is over.) I'm way too scared to even go out there (I'm ridiculously terrified of most insects), but my shoes are out there, so...
Th-They don't eat shoes, do they?
