Boring bugs, such as cedar bark beetles and western cedar borers, are common pests of western red cedar. As they tunnel through the wood, these insects leave behind intricate galleries and patterns, which, though destructive, can be surprisingly fascinating. The winding trails created by their larvae and beetles often appear as elaborate etchings, resembling organic art carved into the wood. These patterns tell a story of the insect's life cycle and movement within the tree. While these designs can appeal aesthetically, they signal significant damage that can compromise the tree's health and the wood's structural integrity.
Their artistry comes at a cost, but it provides a unique glimpse into the natural world.
