I am already INVESTED in this bog body/will killed his dad au

Oh, you think you're invested? This AU is never going to leave my head unless I write it and probably not even then. Except. here's the thing. to write it I need A Plot. This is what they call a problem. Everything I've got, that's pretty much all backstory! I need an actual fucking story to go along with it! Even a lengthy oneshot needs some sort of plot! (...At least it does when I'm writing it.) All I've got is "something something the body turns up again at some point in season one and Hannibal finds out what happened and for a bit it's sort of an Abigail with Nick Boyle situation where Hannibal's covering it up and also low key holding it over Will's head but then things go better because Will's already killed someone and enjoyed it which means Hannibal doesn't feel the need to go quite as hard in regards to all the manipulating and gaslighting because Will's already got a foot in the murder door". ...Which sounds like quite a lot, written out like that, but it's really more vibes than any actual events. More concretely I have vague plans for... a scene. Maybe a scene and a half.

Good news! There is no shortage of peat deposits in Louisiana! In fact, there's quite an abundance of peat to be found there, including the New Orleans area. Must be fate!

Also hey, what if at some point in the intervening fifteen-twenty years (...how old would Will have been in season one anyway? I know he's in his thirties but nothing more precise than that) some random serial killer used the same peat deposit as their dumping ground and then bodies start resurfacing (maybe someone cutting peat dug one up or something. Ooh, or maybe the killer came back years later to dig up the preserved corpses and start displaying them so there can be more murder tableaux goodness and they track the bodies back to that deposit!) so Jack and co are called in to investigate because Hey That's A Lot Of Bodies and then whoops there's Will's dad? It would be delightfully angsty if Will was there when the body was dug up, especially since from what I remember of bog bodies it'd probably be fairly recognizable still. And especially since it's in pieces! So probably he wouldn't be entirely sure until they found the head! (Will didn't see any reason to beg off the case because a) he didn't know the bodies came from a peat deposit when they started, b) he doesn't really remember which peat deposit he dumped his dad's body into, and c) even if he had known it might have looked suspicious if he refused to investigate the case that just happened to involve the father whose ultimate fate he supposedly didn't know turning up dead.)

It's not as impressive as the really old bog bodies, but hey, there are Many Of Them. Probably. If I don't change my mind. I probably won't, I also love me a bog body.

Important questions I now have to consider: how would Will Graham react on seeing his father's severed, mummified head being pulled out of a peat deposit (where he put it)? Personally I'm thinking maybe he stumbles dramatically backwards into Hannibal's arms for reasons.

wait berry and peat anon again because i'm really invested in this au now: louisiana has a lot of wetlands in general so if you want to go the fishing route, there's plenty of marshes and the like that are used for fishing/crabbing

berry and peat anon, i've found one named bog in louisiana (cooter's bog), they're more pitcher plant bogs so people tend to visit them for tourism. it's also entirely possible that if something gets chucked in to the water it could later get caught by carbon dioxide release and raise to the surface!

(Responding to this one because you left anon off on the other one which I assume wasn't intentional.) Oh, now that's just a delightful mental image isn't it. Ah... bodies rising to the surface... I feel like a place that's got a fair amount of tourism isn't the best place to dump a body that you're hoping will stay hidden? But if there's a lot of good fishing places that would be a good cover for why Will's fucking off for a bit with a bunch of coolers and things if anyone calls him on it.

people still harvest peat from bogs, plus there's a lot of berries that grow in bogs! also according to wikipedia there's a lot of bogs in north america

I know there are bogs in North America, I just don't know where they are. I'm sure there's at least a couple in Louisiana? (I don't know why I've gotten attached to this happening in Louisiana but I have.) Also I love the idea of someone just cutting some peat all casual-like and whoops there's a dead body, it's good.

fisherman catches fish and discovers human tooth lodged in its throat/stomach when he guts it. alternatively, human hair with scalp still attached found in a bird's nest? maybe a pearl taken from a clam is discovered to be a human tooth. i'm just spitballing here lol

If I involve a fisherman I think the poor sucker will find himself hooking a human skull. For the aesthetic! But I am getting increasingly attached to the bog body idea... I feel like one does not fish in bogs.
