Biography of Inspector Javert

Javert is seen as the main antagonist in Les Miserables. He was born in a jail with a gypsy or fortune teller as a mother. He sees that beginning as disgusting and does his best to redeem himself. He is a high guard in the prison when Jean Valjean is released and expresses his opinions that Valjean will never change and they will meet again soon. Javert’s sense of justice is strong and demanding and when he finds Valjean again he follows and chases him for the rest of his life. After many encounters with his enemy, Javert finds himself at Valjean’s mercy when Valjean is given the opportunity to kill him after Javert is discovered by the revolutioners as a spy. However, Valjean grants him his life, but unfortunately, that drives him to his ultimate end when he throws himself into the Seine river and dies.
