excerpt from Robin Hood and His Merry Band of Inspector Rex

Corridors and bolt-locked doors later, the trio ran into Robin who was crouching in a corner over some poorly-kempt parchment mumbling with Much who looked over-joyed to be so close to Robin.

Rex barked for their attention, rolling his eyes at how bad the ninja-like skills Robin had once proclaimed to Marion to have were. They could have been the Sheriff’s men! Then the jig would have been up!

“Rex!” Robin exclaimed with appropriate surprise. He then looked behind the dog, unable to focus his brain on more than one thing at a time, to see a tall man and blonde woman smiling with excitement.

Robin stood, hands on his hips as he wondered who Rex had brought with him. “Who’re those two?” he asked the dog, suspicion leaking into his voice.

“Oh!” the Man with Glasses took his hands out of his pocket and held it out to Robin to shake as if his attention had been jogged back into gear (already Rex could see the comparisons between the two men). “I’m the Doctor! This is Rose,” he gestured to the girl by his side, who had the prettiest smile Robin had ever seen in his life.

“Wow,” Robin gasped in awe at the woman who seemed genuinely pleased to meet him and touch his unwashed hand. Most women ran away from him screaming and screeching, unless he had just dropped off a bag of grain to their village, in which case they only backed away slowly.

“A doctor?” Robin repeated impressed, getting back to the task at hand. He nudged Much in the ribs and thought himself better than usual for finding the answer to all their problems so quickly.
