The Nasi Lemak checklist #2 Nasi Lemak is Malaysia’s best-known dish. It definitely can claim to be the national dish. Translated from Bahasa: Nasi = rice Lemak = rich/creamy (from santan/coconut cream) A good Nasi Lemak is not easy to find in Auckland. The basic NL comprises the lemak rice with sambal (onion, chilli, tamarind, belacan, lemongrass), crispy fried ikan bills, roasted peanuts (skin on), cucumber slices and egg usually hard-boiled. Add a curry or rendang to elevate the NL from the basic. Pakcik Kenny & Makcik Doris do a very acceptable Nasi Lemak at their small (10 seater) eatery at Sim’s Kitchen, 421 Hillsborough Rd. The egg is done onsen style and the peanuts have skin on. They also do a Nasi Lemak bungkus (pack/wrap). The lemak rice is wrapped in banana leaf with sambal, egg, cucumber, peanuts and ikan bilis), triangle-shaped, for $6, perfect for a take-out lunch. #nasilemak #lemakrice #roastedpeanuts #sambal #cucumber #boiledegg #curry #rendang #simskitchen #hillsborough #instanasilemak (at Sim's KItchen)
