I dreamed that I played Breath of the Wild with my brother last night. I remember thinking at some point in the dream, “DAMN I’m so glad that he’s here. I must have dreamed that suicide stuff. Thank god.”

Feeling personally attacked by the universe.

Small TW for animal (bird) death.

Me, minding my business, sitting outside to reply to an ask. Just as I settled in, something suddenly hit the patio beside me with a sickening thunk. Just the other day my wife and I had been listening to the bird calls of the nest in the shingles above the patio and she had mentioned "I hope no baby birds fall". My shock was slowly overcome by a sinking despair as the featherless little creature writhed and spasmed from its belly flop against the concrete.

I cradled it in my hand. It was so small and hot to the touch. It's little, featherless wings flapped weakly a moment as it laid in my palm before going limp. There was nothing to be done, I could see the blood slowly pooling under the skin from what I can only determine were ruptured organs. Despite the fact there was nothing I could have done short of knowing the future, the nausea of grief washed over me.

If I had merely found its body while stepping outside, it would have been sad. But the simple fact that it happened right beside me changes how intensely I feel. If I had been only 5 inches to the left, perhaps the little bird could have fallen on me and that may have been enough to save it. Or perhaps I should have anticipated this situation and laid out something soft in the case a hatchling would tumble from its nest.

No helping it now. But the lingering sense of irrational responsibility squeezes the place right below my heart.
