Here are three of the seven swallowtail caterpillars that Andy and I counted on the fennel this morning.
Polyphemus Moths Emerge
by Vanessa Verdecia
After months of overwintering, an adult Polyphemus moth from one of the cultures reared in the Section of Invertebrate Zoology emerged from its cocoon at the end of April. Check out the pictures of the adult moths as well as pictures of the first and last instars of the caterpillars and one of the cocoons from last year!
Vanessa Verdecia is a collection assistant in the museum’s Section of Invertebrate Zoology. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.
Hey looky here little swallowtail instar! Did you just hatch in the bouquet I picked for Andy last week? I hear you need to need to eat a lot to become a caterpillar so off we go ... back to the fennel patch .

REARING THE BLACK SOLDIER FLY, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) IN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF BARAMATI (INDIA) | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY
Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) is a black soldier fly with high quality (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) Appreciation and environmental importance are due to the efficient role played in the decomposition of organic waste matters. Adults have a life expectancy of around twelve to thirteen days on average. For the average life span of the adult black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, the optimum temperature and relative humidity (RH) are 31°C and 80%, respectively. The lifespan of an adult is reduced by six days as RH decreases (up to sixty percent). At a temperature of 30.15 0.26°C, larval life was found to have a lifetime of twenty days (20.0 1.05) days. During the rainy season, when the temperature is about 28°C, larval life has been found to have a longer lifespan (from July to November). Even in the absence of decomposing organic matter, the adults of the black soldier fly have been confirmed to lay eggs. The eggs were collected from a variety of sources, including sponges, cardboard, and the meshes of the nets used for caging. The egg count came in at about 477 10.69 eggs per batch. On a temperature of 30.15° (0.26), the fertilised eggs were observed in the process of growth and hatching within 4.5 days. Freshly laid eggs were found to have a diameter of 0.901 (0.013) millimetre. At 30.15° (0.26), the emergence of adult flies from the stage of prepupa took 14.7 (1.07) days. At a temperature of 30.15° (0.026), the total lifespan (from egg to adult) was recorded to be 57.8 days. The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus), has five morphological instars, which is a notable and distinguishing characteristic (or stages). The black soldier fly larval instars were discovered to have a stronger positive olfactory response to decomposed organic wastes than to other food sources. The body lengths of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth instars were 2.35 0.02, 6.45 0.07, 10.26 0.11, 15.92 0.23, and 17.34 0.09 millimetres. The adult fly's body length was 16.92 0.21 millimetres on average. Adult males had a wingspan of 12.25 0.21 millimetres and adult females had a wingspan of 13.02 0.23 millimetres.
