Thessaloniki western downtown – urban example of a deserted city centre
Thessaloniki today seeks to define its role in the Balkan context, articulate its identity in relation to post-crisis Greece, and reorganize the problematic areas of its downtown.
The curriculum focuses on the western part of Thessaloniki downtown, an area historically defined as part of the commercial centre, extending on both sides of the roman Axis of Egnatia from the west of Venizelou Street, to the Hall of Justice and the Vardari district. A thriving, cosmopolitan bankers’ and goldsmiths’ quarter in the first part of the 20th century, the area has transformed since the annihilation of the city’s Jewish population during the WWII into a high density, mixed use quarter of layers’ and notaries’ offices, textile industries, small scale manufacturing, warehouses, and gross handling and retail stores. During the past two decades it has gradually emptied out of manufacturing uses, and acquired the character of an abandoned urban zone in transition. The area possesses a distinct ambiance, high density abandoned urban stock, manifesting deterioration, at the same time making evident the traces of its cosmopolitan and industrial past. Since the mid 00’s the area has become a hub in the city’s night life, and attracted the establishment of a plethora of young local creative industries.
Thessaloniki Western Downtown manifests urban transition processes in real time. Considered as an emergent creative cluster it offers a prime case of discourse on the re-articulation of labor in the context of capitalist crisis. As an urban paradigm of a deserted city centre, it comprises a test field for the current conflicting approaches to the means and ends of urban gentrification.
Το πρόγραμμα επιμένει στην περιοχή του δυτικού κέντρου της Θεσσαλονίκης η οποία ορίζεται ενθεν και εκείθεν της Εγνατίας οδού και από την οδό Βενιζέλου ανατολικά μέχρι τα Δικαστήρια και τον Βαρδάρη δυτικά. Η Θεσσαλονίκη αναζητά σήμερα τον ρόλο της στην Βαλκανική, αναστοχάζεται την σχέση της με την υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα και καλείται να οργανώσει εκ νέου την επιλεγμένη προβληματική της περιοχή, στην οποία επικεντρώνεται φέτος το ενδιαφέρον του μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος: η περιοχή χαρακτηριζόταν στο παρελθόν από το χονδρεμπόριο και τη βιοτεχνία της, παρήκμασε, εκκενώθηκε εν μέρει και τώρα περιλαμβάνει έρημα κτίρια, υλοποιημένα ήδη σε υπερβολική πυκνότητα. Η εγκατάλειψη που χαρακτηρίζει μεγάλο κομμάτι της περιοχής, κάποιες λειτουργούσες ακόμη αποθήκες καθώς και η εμφανής αποκρυστάλλωση ιχνών από το βιοτεχνικό παρελθόν δίνουν στην περιοχή ξεχωριστό χαρακτήρα. Συγκεντρώνοντας ολοένα στο επίπεδο των ισογείων της χρήσεις διασκέδασης, η περιοχή αρχίζει παράλληλα στην περίοδο αυτή να συγκεντρώνει στην έκτασή της σημαντικό αριθμό μικρών εργαστηρίων νέων δημιουργών: Βρίσκεται έτσι προγραμματικά μέσα στον πυρήνα της συζήτησης περί νέων εργασιακών παραδειγμάτων και στο πλαίσιο των μετασχηματισμών της καπιταλιστικής κρίσης. Βρίσκεται επίσης στο επίκεντρο της σύγχρονης αντιπαράθεσης για τα μέσα και τις σκοπιμότητες των διαφορετικών ειδών αστικού εξευγενισμού.
