When the Bough Breaks by Kara Laus
And he grabbed her arm, and she bit down hard. And she tasted the blood as she felt the thump, thump, thumping against her muscles and bones. And though the blood was pounding in her ears and in her eyes, she kept them open to watch his body writhe. Who knows why he was furious, for all the heat, the sweat, the vessels like barrels of wine down the river, rushing, pushing, tumbling, his hand on her throat. And her head knocked ont he headboard. And she remembered when she was just ten, and the bough broke and the baby fell from her favorite hiding tree in her Sylvan home. A tree which was her escape and her thrill. A tree with a strong body and arms that would hold her and keep her safe. A tree with soft bark and green leaves, full of vitality and full of possibilities. A tree she loved - and she loved every inch of it - snapping its own twigs and hers under the weight of her company, and never before had she so feared what she so loved. And he left bruises, and he kissed each one. His arms strong and his body stronger. He held her and promised not to break. And where there had been blood and fire there was only breath, rising and falling, and glistening eyes. And she hurt so sorely, as she had the last time and the time before that, but the wrath was gone from his gaze. A man with rough skin and a warm face, full of vitality, full of... The writhe was gone from their bodies, the grip, the bite, the knock was gone between them. And never before had she so loved what she so feared.
