Instrumentalepathy, The Gaslamp Killer (Cuss Records)
The best electronic music does not embody a rejection of natural acoustic sounds; it embraces a full spectrum of timbres. Kit percussionists are particularly sensitive to the exact character of a sound (consider cymbal varieties) and are therefore typically better equipped to make electronic music that celebrates unique sounds. William Bensussen (aka The Gaslamp Killer) mesmerizes his listeners with middle-eastern influenced electronic club rock throughout his newest album Instrumentalepathy. Bensussen writes drum kit driven music, but he balances powerful beats with wild, club-tested (Low End Theory) electronic sounds. Instrumentalepathy features a handful of talented guests (including Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin and Amir Yaghmai on guitar and tambur) who greatly amplify Bensussen's vision. Instrumentalepathy is focused and balanced. It is untamed but not unwieldy. His album reflects highly, not only on his abilities as a musician, but also on his abilities as a producer (Cuss is his own label). Instrumentalepathy is a tribute to what musicians can accomplish outside of the established industry. Of course, it helps to have talented friends.
Residual Tingles - The Gaslamp Killer
I have had The Gaslamp Killer’s new release, ‘Instrumentalepathy’, on heavy rotation for the last week. The Los Angeles-based DJ and producer melds electronic with psychedelic in an album he says was based on his own near-death experience three years ago. Listen to the first single ‘Residual Tingles’, and then listen to the rest of the album. It’s the kind of triumphant – at times even soaringly orchestral – collection of tunes that you want as the soundtrack to your life (or, at the very least, your Monday).

It’s been four years since beat maestro The Gaslamp Killer released his stunning debut record, Breakthrough. While the injuries from his near-fatal scooter accident were enough to keep him from walking for several months, they didn't keep him from recording music. His sophomore album is titled Instrumentalepathy, it will be out on September 16th, and he’s shared the record’s first song titled “Residual Tingles”. Organ chords and shifting conga polyrhythms get things moving right out of the gate before an angelic string section swoops in and envelops the arrangement in a transcendent melodic sheen. Among the most talented of the Brainfeeder-affiliated, The Gaslamp Killer has a knack for shifting psychedelic textures in and out the mix as he builds a cohesive whole, never allowing the song to lose its pacing or fall apart. About halfway in, a gorgeous string solo wades its way through the percussive frenzy with everything getting abruptly cut out of the mix shortly afterwards, save for some disembodied female vocals that bring the song to its foreboding outro. It’s a strong return to form for one of the beat scene’s most distinct pioneers, and it gives me no reason to believe that Instrumentalepathy won’t be one of the strongest electronic releases of 2016.
