"It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone to believe anything on insufficient evidence." -- William Kingdon Clifford, "The Ethics of Belief"
Hi! I’m a pretty new fan and I already love your blog. I, um, have a question... have we ever seen Van without pants? As in, do his legs exist? Thank you in advance. This is definitely the most embarrassing ask I’ve ever asked.
thank you very much my gal!! welcome to the club? truly excellent question - i can understand the confusion as to the questionable existence of most of van mccann
in the very early days, there was the occasional ripped jean that hinted at the existence of a leg or two (see pacifier mv for some of that sweet, sweet knee action) evidenced here:
then the balcony went gold in the uk and we were blessed [read: cursed] with this:
but in recent years (as mccann moves into the critically endangered category) there have been no such sightings. and at this point, i am concerned that the mere glimpse of an ankle would knock me dead much like an old victorian woman
The excuse that is banished, the excuse every pagan hopes in vain to use, the excuse that is exploded by God’s self-revelation in nature is the pretended, vacuous, dishonest appeal to ignorance. No one will be able to approach the judgment seat of God justly pleading, “If only I had known You existed, I would surely have served You.” That excuse is annihilated. No one can lightly claim “insufficient” evidence for not believing in God.
R. C. Sproul
unpopular opinion (apparently): The Las Vegas shooting was a lot of things, but it was not terrorism.
"… if I let myself believe anything on insufficient evidence, there may be no great harm done by the mere belief; it may be true after all, or I may never have occasion to exhibit it in outward acts. But I cannot help doing this great wrong towards Man, that I make myself credulous. The danger to society is not merely that it should believe wrong things, though that is great enough; but that it should become credulous, and lose the habit of testing things and inquiring into them; for then it must sink back into savagery." -- William Kingdon Clifford"
“If one had sufficient evidence to warrant belief in a particular claim, then one wouldn’t believe the claim of the basis of faith.”
-- Peter Boghossian
If you had evidence, you wouldn’t need faith. If faith was any good as a reliable path to truth, you wouldn’t pretend to have evidence. And you wouldn’t reject everybody else’s faith-based beliefs about their different gods.
