Your blog is one I truly enjoy. Everyday I am confronted by religious zealots and many times I draw on my experiences with your blog to fight back. I only hope that one day the rest of the world sees the truth as well.
It’s my experience that believers have only a limited and predictable repertoire of excuses to offer, and very few require actually knowing the scripture in order to refute them. Although that won’t hurt if you do know some of it.
You can’t be moral/truly know love without (my) god
Something can’t come from nothing
Why do you hate something you claim you don’t believe in?
If you don’t believe in god why do you talk about him?
You shouldn’t be rude/disrespect god/(my) religious beliefs
I have faith/everyone has faith
You can’t prove it’s not true
Here’s a verse of the scripture to prove the scripture
God is [several attributes that render it impossible]
You send yourself to hell
It’s arrogant to think humans are the highest forms of life
I had an experience/god helped me when [x]
Everything’s too complicated to be random/needs a creator
[Story/character/prophecy which is false or trivial] from [scripture] has been proven true
[Scientist] believes in god
You know god exists but you deny him
You just don’t want to see the truth
How do you explain [anecdote or myth] without god?
Once you get the hang of addressing these types of excuses, you’re able to stand your ground against the majority of believers. Practice makes perfect.
It’s also my impression that there are far more non-believers out there than we know. There are those who know they don’t believe, but don’t have the confidence or words to express it, are under the misconception it’s rude to or they’re not entitled to, or are socially disadvantaged from doing so (from religious parents to enshrined apostasy laws). There are also those who think something is a bit fishy about the beliefs they were brought up with, and likewise might not have the words to express what it is, but may be afraid to question them due to the fear inculcated in them by the belief system, to discourage them from thinking their way out of and leaving it.
The best thing you can do is unapologetically talk about and criticize these beliefs. People see it and it makes a difference.
