New IMAX camera
Mike explains the basics of an integrated camera system now with an interchangeable stereoscopic lens set perfectly pre-aligned and tested to give consistent high-level stereoscopic results using MTF for perfect contrast preservation. MTF is usually measured along a line leading out from the center of the image and into a far corner, for a fixed line frequency (usually 10-30 LP/mm). These lines can either be parallel to the direction leading away from the center (sagittal) or perpendicular to this direction (meridional). It's important L&R is similar for the best result. The readout of the MTF individual lens chart will show how L&R channel (lenses) need to be corrected, or if it's in acceptable tolerance.
The individual set will be different, as well as the set's lenses regarding the optimum "sweet spot"—the best sharpness and contrast at what aperture is KEY to know.
The optimum 3D result is affected by contrast, resolution, astigmatism, aperture and distortion of any lens. The key in superior results of any 3D experience is matching and knowing the difference so it can be corrected digitally.
Pro 3D camera cameramen, producers, editors and post producers, do know this and consider and plan this in detail. There is even more to it.
:) MIK
