what is this and how do you play?

Dominion is a card game that has now been recreated online for free play. It's similar to collectable card games (CCGs) like Magic: The Gathering, except that Dominion is a deck-building game itself: players start each game with a set number of coins each, and you use that coin to buy new cards to add to your deck. Those cards can be more coins, or they can be other cards that you can use strategically to acquire more victory points and win the game.

If you'd like to give it a try, let me know! It's probably easier to learn the game with real cards, but I'm up for walking somebody through it online.
