Most of us might have been in a situation where we ended up home to a locked door, with no keys in our pockets and we used our smartphones to call for help. But what if this smartphone could unlock your door?
Yes, it can. Tech firm August has launched its Smart Lock in partnership with Apple and it will be available in Apple Stores and most retail tech stores, though there is not much information about its Indian launch.

The August Smart Lock looks like this, and it can be attached to almost all doors. But it cannot be easily recognized from the outside since it looks like a normal lock. Using Bluetooth as its main technology (no need for WiFi or any form of Internet), the application on your smartphone will open the lock and close it automatically, while it can also be controlled manually. Anyone who has the app on their phone can receive access to a specific smart lock from its principal user. For example, you locked the house when you left for work and your wife wants to go home for an emergency. If it is a normal lock and the key is with you only, then it would be a problem. But with the smart lock, you can just ask your wife to download the app on her phone, and you can give access to her. You need only 4 AA batteries to power the smart lock.
It all sounds good, but the price of this Smart Lock crashes bad! At $249, the Smart lock is not something that a normal person would like to buy. And yes, there are a lot of disadvantages as well, which include hackers, probability of your phone getting lost and other stuff. But since the Smart Lock includes the conventional locking mechanism, you can always bank on it, in case it does not work.
Seems like the Smart Lock is an intelligent device, but August is not the first company that has been trying to manufacture one. Indeed, the Smart Lock was ready to be sold last year, but August wanted to make it much better and more compatible for all doors, because each door’s weight had to be tackled and the friction had to be good enough to get the lock opened quickly and flawlessly. Other than its heavy pricing strategy, the August Smart Lock is definitely worth a try!
