Interaction Awards
I mentioned in my series on Interaction 16 that I was asked to fill the role of photographer for the Interaction Awards, which took place the last night of the conference. I put my Nikon D7200 to good use. The results aren’t professional grade, but I’m reasonably happy with them. I got them all posted on IxDA’s Flickr account last night.
This Week in Design
There have been a number of significant announcements in the past week or so. Check it out!
Interaction 16, which will be held March 2-4 in Helsinki, Finland, recently announced early bird ticket sales. There are less than 50 still available at 20% off, so get yours now. They also announced their first two keynote speakers, Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino and Marko Ahtisaari.
Interaction 16 also announced its call for proposals, featuring lightning talks, idea presentations, full-length talks, and panels. The deadline to submit is September 16th.
The 2016 Interaction Awards announced that it is now open for entries in the following categories: Connecting, Engaging, Empowering, Expressing, Disrupting, and Optimizing. The deadline is September 13th. They also announced Kim Goodwin as this year’s jury chair.
Midwest UX 2015 announced its first keynote speaker, Dan Saffer.
O’Reilly has announced a new conference, the O’Reilly Design Conference, which will be held January 20-22 in San Francisco. They are currently accepting proposals to speak, which are due July 20.

My favorite quote in my Fast Company piece about the inaugural Interaction Awards (of which I was a judge) came from the event co-chair, Jennifer Bove: "Behavior isn’t explicit in computer chips; interaction designers are the people who understand how to make things work.” But what was also interesting about this particular awards show was that it made it clear that interaction design is stretching beyond the screen and ever further into the physical world. That's a super interesting proposition and challenge, and I confess I was particularly partial to those entries that moved beyond the promise of technology to offer something seamlessly crafted and infinitely compelling.

This is recently the "out of a box" a vitamins project for Samsung and Helem Hamlyn Centre. It was nominated for Interaction Awards 2012.
Even this commercial have excellent make up and production, but I believe that any children can use a mobile without need a book.

Interaction 12: IxDA Interaction Awards
Friday night of the conference found attendees gathered in the Round Room of the Mansion House, home of the Lord Mayor of Dublin. It was a spectacular venue for the very first IxDA Interaction Awards ceremony, sponsored by Google. With over 300 submissions from 33 countries, the judges had their hands full. The jurying was documented in professionally-produced videos that were used to announce the winners in each of the six categories, as well as Best in Show, Best Concept, Best Student, and People’s Choice.
When I attended the first Interaction conference in 2008, I had a strong feeling that it was an important event—a major pivot point for not just the organization, but for the profession. I had that feeling again during ceremony. Interaction Designers from all over the world were celebrating and honoring the outstanding work of their peers with the same gravitas as the film industry at the Oscars or the music industry at the Grammys. And well we should, for our work is just as significant in the number of people it reaches and the profound effect it has on society.
If you think that I’m overstating the importance of the work or the awards, I encourage you to view the finalists—each is showcased in a short video. The range of work is impressive. The creativity and ingenuity is inspirational.
The team that took on this initiative has much to be proud of, and our community owes them a debt of gratitude. This is the beginning of a tradition that has huge potential for increasing the public awareness of our profession.
