A key example of conversation steering. The son has been hinting and implying all night, subtly chastising the father for his risky investing mistake while pretending to kindness. "We want to calm your nerves. Don't think too much about it." "It's no big deal. So much more has been lost, right?"
So the dad stands up, makes the implication explicit, swears in the future he will behave otherwise—mutual futures modeling—and the son is forced to immediately recant it, to assure the father that a mistake has been made, and ending his performance.
