If you are on the move like I am, a good, decent bag might come in handy.
Belgian brand HEDGREN teamed up with designer TONY SPACKMAN and this is the result...
The Interchangeables collection comes in 3 colours, black, navy and curry and offers a range of possibilities with an Outer Tote, Zipper Bag, Carier Bag and Laptop Bag.
Hedgren's Interchangeables collection won the ILM Award for 'Best In Basics' at the Internationale Lederwaren Meise in Offenbach.
I had the pleasure of testing out this bag, (the curry HINT Outer Tote) and I was surprised how many people came up to me and started to talk about it while I was carrying the bag with me. The bag's esthetic definitely applies to many different personalities. Also, I was very impressed by the multi functionality of the bag.
The Outer bag can be worn on the back ànd in your hands, as you please, plus the bag's handles are nicely hidden away if you don't need them.
The Interchangeables collection is made for 'creative people on the road'. Models, photographers, dj's, musicians etc but is also perfect for a creative chick on the road like me who has a certain appreciation for androgyn objects. :)

Quite an interesting capsule collection for a Belgian brand that I always associated with the mainstream reliable backpack for kids in the early 90's.
This collection made me especially curious about 'the man behind the tote' which is British designer Tony Spackman, currently living in Amsterdam.
Tony was active as a Men’s Design Director at Nike for 9 years, started his career at Maharishi London and is currently designer and owner of The Non.
I had the opportunity to ask this talented individual some questions and this is what he told me.
How did Hedgren end up working with you. How did this collaboration start?
I received a call from Gert Kerkstoel asking if I would be interested in working on creating a new creative platform for a luggage brand called Hedgren. I said sure lets meet and see what they need
Did you knew Hedgren as a brand? If not, what was your first impression?
I was familiar with their product identity and current consumer type of the time but was not so aware of the products quality and its extremely durable functionality. It was a pleasure to begin working with a brand with such craftmanship all ready well established.
Interchangeables are made for (creative) people on the road. Why a collection for those group of people?
The brands core DNA and consumer type remained strong but it was important for them to grow and become re-connected to a younger audience. These types of target consumer groups were discussed and researched in detail. The observations lead me to consider more of a collaborative angle of research to discover the needs of those in the know. I conducted short brainstorming sessions to gain additional input and advise of other creatives within different professional fields. In doing so I began the process of redefining the products identity through necessity and this helped us to redefine new building blocks aimed at a top tier audience, in this case the creative. This in time will inevitably begin a trickle down effect and allow new consumer types to be introduced to a brand that may have once overlooked.
You worked at Nike for many years as a Men's designer, currently you are active at The Non. How did your personal style, vision and longterm experience as a designer translate in this Hedgren capsule collection?
My search for authenticity and a desire to further knowledge, experience and personal development always play a key role in the kinds of projects I work on. Hedgren was an interesting project and gave me a good opportunity to continue working on these. It's hard to pin point exactly how that translates into the products themselves as I tend to treat every project very differently to the next, the protection of a brands integrity is what remain the most important to me.
Did you stumble over any challenges production-wise?
Hedgren's sampling and production process is like nothing I have experienced before, they seem to have got it down to close perfection over the years. The samples would come in close to perfect every time with just a few minor alterations needed. Turn around was fast and communication very clear.
You collaborated with PATTA not so long ago, which resulted in a very colourful collection. The Hedgren collection is more modest in it's colour scheme. A calculated choice?
The process for each was treated very differently. The two brands have very different identities.
Do you use the Interchangeable bags yourself? If so, any cool anekdotes or interesting reactions on the collection that stayed with you?
I have been using them myself and have a list of people hoping to get their hands on them... The reaction has been very positive.
I'm very happy to announce that I can make 1 reader very happy with a HEDGREN INTERCHANGEABLES LAPTOP BAG (black!)
