Terrible Task-ware

I found this terrible task-ware website called Blinkee.com which sells all different types of light up jewelry. The website hurts your eyes to look at with all the different colours shooting out against the black. I redesigned the positioning of the tabs. The website originally had them placed on the bottom of the website which didn't make sense because a person would need to hunt them down. I brought them to the top of the page along with their social media platforms. I also categorized their products as they had the scattered on the left side of the page. The shipping page was dull and lacked organizations. Therefore, I set it up in a simpler way so that a customer can proceed with an easy check up thats proper and well formatted.

PennyStocks - Bad Visualization Design

This redesign works well because unlike the original, this redesign shows how companies are losing profit in relation to their overall revenue. The total revenue of each company is still dictated by the area of the square along the X-axis, but their positive or negative profit will also be displayed on the Y-axis to show how they are losing or making money in real time. This makes it much more apparent to the viewer as opposed to a negative integer being included in the squares, like it is in the original.

Good Interactive Visualization Design

The design of this interactive visualization works well because the main content area is uncluttered, and allows you to easily track the name of song/artist as it appears and disappears from the top music charts. The corresponding lines allow you to see what spot it rose from in the prior weeks, while the moving timeline below easily shows you what period of time you are in. The ‘Change Year’ option at the bottom is immediately distinguishable from the rest of the design because of its separation through the use of rule. The layout of this filtering area is simple to understand through the use of colour and proximity.

MyMRU Redesign

This design works well because it moves all the directional icons into the top right hand corner, where a user would expect them to be. It separates the icons by internal navigation to the left and external sites to the left. The design also works well because it gives the search bar a large degree of hierarchy, since it would most likely be one of the most important functions after the global navigation tabs. Local navigation is underneath the search bar, and allows the user to jump to the ‘tile’ that they require. The tiles are also all the same size for visual consistency and to allow the eye to scan across them much more easily.

Calgary Public Library - Bad Taskware Interface

This redesign works well because it lays out the search results for the user in large, scannable blocks. Info about the requested book or books can be easily seen, like how many copies are available and at which branches. The option to request a hold is immediately noticeable on the search results. The filter options to narrow your search are also available on the left side, where local navigation would be expected to be in the user’s mind. Finally, the task interface asks for your library card and number before proceeding on to placing your hold at your selected branch.

Interface Sketch: MyMRU

This is a sketch of how I would redesign MyMRU: 

One of the things that has always bugged me about this site is that the calendar is basically nonexistent. It is two loooong lists that take up so much room on the home page - one list of student events, and one for university events. 

In my redesign I want the calendar to be more prominent, and also actually look like a calendar. It should be somewhere that I can see both student and school events, as well as my own personal class schedule. 

This would make things way more streamlined AND usable.

the bad and ugly

I wanted to redesign the What’s your pay gap interactive infographic because I found it to be too responsive which I thought was something that wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing. Every slight touch of the mouse causes the dots plotted on the graph to scatter everywhere which makes it really hard to fully understand and analyze the information being shown. In my redesign I cleaned up the structure but would mainly focus on ensuring that you could (1) search more professions, and (2) be able to look at the data without it over-reacting.

Interface Sketch 8

The original website design does not have effective layout of showing the connection towards the neighbourhood and the trees. I put both categories side by side in order to show the comparison easier and also make it easier for the viewer to play around with the visualization.
