I think a reason those “you can’t ship those characters, they see each other as family!” arguments seem so poor is that, unless you’re shipping a confirmed canonical couple, you are inherently changing the nature of the characters’ relationship somehow. As in, changing platonic friends to lovers, or enemies to lovers, or even shipping two characters who have never even met before! Who cares if one of the guys in your ship called the other one his ‘brother’? The people from that ship over there have tried to kill each other. This other one features two guys who are both married to women in the source material. This other one has a dude who's DEAD. Like, none of this matters. Follow in the footsteps of shippers before you and learn not to care so much about canon.

This year's official arts for Ace and Sabo birthdays look like they are designed to give a similar feeling and also "speak" to each other? ( I don't know if that makes sense but I'll explain as good as I can what I mean)
They aren't identical. Ace's art features a younger version of himself (around 17 years old) while Sabo is in the current timeline since he wears that yellow-brownish coat. Also, Ace's art is around the dawn(or is it sunset?) with clear weather while Sabo's picture shows him walking in the rain.
However Look at them next to each other:
They are both keep on moving despite their obstacles. Ace's sadness and grief of the past is manifested by showing a kid Sabo on the ship. And Sabo keeps on moving despite the rain- which is often associated with sadness and melancholy, something his life is full of.
And they go to different directions, Ace is on the harbor because the sea is calling him and he's a pirate and Sabo walks towards the opposite direction, in a city, because he's a revolutionary whose main goal is to protect innocents and help make the world a better and safer place for civilians to live on it.
Still, looking the two pictures next to each other, there is a symmetry on the way they move forward - towards to achieving their dreams, the kind of life each of them wants to life.
And more importantly it looks like these two pictures could have a conversation with each other by the way their bodies are placed on the drawings. Like they just encountered each other - despite being on different timelines, on different places.
And that makes me think that if they could see each other for a single moment - defying the impossibility of that happening bc as we already said they are on different places on different times- they would both be proud and extremely happy that the other continues to try to live their lives the way they want to.
