There is something I don't understand about Jean...of all he was the one who struggle the most when it comes to killing people but at the beginning he was also one of the few graduates who wanted to join the police. But if he had joined the police the probabilities that he would have to kill people would be definitely higher than for joining the survey corps right ? Because it's the police who deals with people ? (also sorry for the mistakes English isn't my first langage ^^")
Your english is perfect.
Jean was 15 when he boasted about joining the MPs and having an easy life. The rest of the recruits were equally naive and idealistic. Marco, for instance, got starry eyed when he talked about serving the King. Back then, Eren thought exterminating titans would bring peace. None of them knew anything. They were children.
Jean had no idea of the reality of being an MP. He only knew what he’d seen. They lived well. They were respected. They had an easy life. Jean wanted that. The darker and more subversive activities of the MPs were unknown to him and everyone else.
So I think when people look at the trainee days and the ideas these characters hold, it’s important to remember that it was the starting point of their character journeys. They were like loaves of unbaked bread that hadn’t taken shape yet.
If Jean had joined the MPs, I’d expect he’d be a lot like Nile. He’d do his job. He’d be frustrated with the laziness and corruption, but not feel compelled to change it. He’d remain purposefully ignorant of the activities of the Interior MP like Nile was.
Thanks for the ask!
