@momtaku
🌈 ❤️
Watching and enabling and participating in @momtaku's descent. We're making good choices.
Are we though??? ARE WE? We signed up for cute kids and pretty art and “oh look at what our friends are cosplaying! We should read the series because they look cool!” Nowhere in this thought process did I agree to having my heart thoroughly destroyed in every possible direction.
Uh oh. I am beginning to experience the early warning signs of a new fandom. Symptoms include:
buying all available volumes
taking screenshots
rereading scenes immediately after reading them
opening documents entitled "just a few observations"
developing strong opinions about fictional educational policy
This is not an emergency. But it may be a situation.
You were warned.

Can you tell us what do you think Erwin would have done if he had survived? Do you agree for example with theories that he would have probably prevented most of the anti eldian plot and he would have probably done a partial or mini rumbling?(For example that's a user on reddit called tenken who wrote essays about this but many fans came up with this on their own as well)Personally I think he would have tried to save parodies and achieve peace with the other countries.
The Uprising Arc is evidence of what Erwin would've done had he survived. In those chapters, the Survey Corps overthrew the government and put Historia on the throne without resorting to mass murder. It was a gamble, but a successful one.
Had Erwin survived, he would've used political maneuvering to secure peace treaties. He'd form alliances with nations like Hizaru using the sun stones. And he could certainly use the threat of the Rumbling if he needed to. He wouldn't ignore the problem of the titan powers. I'm sure given enough time, Hange and Armin would come up with a solution to that.
Thanks for the ask!
Hello!!! :) I sent the ask about what would Erwin do next just a few moments ago and I'd like to add onto that - I've seen a comment on reddit saying that "Eren wanted death because he couldn’t live with what winning cost. Erwin wanted death because he could and he didn’t want anyone else to carry that weight."
But personally I think that's wrong because Eren didn't want to die, he just wanted to protect his friends and Paradis and didn't know how to do that without dying. As for Erwin, I don't think he ever wanted to die, although he does say at moments he considered dying would be easier, he never actually said he wanted to die and on the contrary, he says he always wanted to find out the truth and find the basement, and the only reason why he see him doubt himself is because of Zackly, no? As you pointed out in your essay. Cheers and love
I'd argue that aside from Reiner, no one in the series wanted to die. Erwin and Eren were resigned to the inevitability of their death but that's very different than wanting it. Erwin led a suicide charge with no way out. Eren started the rumbling knowing his friends would try to stop him.
But I'd characterize Eren a little differently. He cared for his friends, true, but freedom was his top priority. He primarily wanted a world that was free of titan and of other people. If his friends survived, that would be great, but in that final battle, they were on their own.
This opinion however is coming from someone who the AI Overlords have summed up this way
I did say those words, although I think iI'm a little more nuanced than that. Thanks for the ask.
Momtaku, do you believe Erwin is a good person? I've always thought he was, so I'm very surprised when I see lately a lot of threads on the erwin subreddit say that he was morally Gray (eg in dnd alignment and argue he isn't good but neutral, however neutral people are selfish and primarily focused on their own needs while good people care about others and can be altruistic and they basically care about the bit of humanity as well and others while neutral alignment doesn't), because I personally believe you was morally good. As we can see from the series and all the side content, he actually cares for his soldiers and tries to minimize human casualties as much as he can and he does care about the good of humanity as we can see in the show where he actually supports the cast when thry tried to prevent the rumbling, and hanji points out Erwin cared about the rest of humanity.
Should I be surprised when I searched for my old posts in Google I now get an AI Overview summing up everything I've written about Erwin in the last decade? No. But I'm horrified to know that my Tumblr blog has been fed into an LLM.
I agree with everything you say except to add that a good person can also be morally grey. In fact the survey corps consists primarily of good people doing terrible things because the brutality of their life requires it. Erwin is no different in that.
When I see someone online trying to argue that Erwin wasn't a good person, one of the following is true:
They are an edgelord seeking attention
They are trying to use Erwin to make Eren look less terrible.
They ship Levi with someone else.
Thanks for the ask anon. I see you sent me a few so I'll be looking over those as well.
Hello! I'm new to Tumblr, but found your account(page/blog?) while looking for different Attack on Titan analyses. I mostly stay on the Twitter and Reddit side of the fandom (or at least the side of those platforms with people who like the ending and consider Eren to be one of their favourite characters). With that being said I wanted to ask you this:
When do you think Eren knew he would be stopped and that the Titan powers would vanish?
To me, 139 seems to imply that it was during chapter 90. For example, Armin says "That was the future you saw at the medal ceremony" and Eren knowing he'd be stopped is why he pushed his friends away, as they would then become heroes (though that clearly wasn't the main reason for his actions). But the idea he only learned it after becoming the Founding Titan has picked up a lot of steam, with it now seeming like the fanbase is 50/50 on the matter. I imagine the reason for this is the panel where Eren mentions that past and future don't exist to him anymore. However, if Isayama wanted to convey that Eren gained future memories at a point beyond the medal ceremony, I feel like special attention would have been paid to it in the final chapter, rather than a single panel.
I'll say I think either interpretation works for Eren's character, but I'm personally leaning towards the medal ceremony. In this case, people bring up the fact that he never considers his defeat or the end of the Titan curse (doesn't bring it up to Historia in 130 and even considers the possibility of one of his friends having to inherit his Titan during the railroad scene), but I think this is because he hadn't yet fully internalized the meaning of his future memories.
Before saving Ramzi, I think the only thing Eren thought of as being guaranteed to happen was the Rumbling, because that was something he already wanted. He had no way of understanding if the rest of his future memories would come to fruition or what he would even need to do to reach that future.
I believe that it isn't until after saving Ramzi, does Eren finally understand the inevitability of the future he saw (as I believe it's the first time he actually lives through a future memory), and as a result of him finally admitting his childish and selfish nature, is he able to accept a future in where he cannot complete the Rumbling, simply spending the rest of the story in a state of deep self-loathing, single-mindedly pursuing that future. Apologies for rambling about my own thoughts, it seems like you've never been much of an Eren fan lol, but I just wanted to hear other perspectives on this.
This was such a thoughtful and interesting read. Thank you for sending it to me. I'll confess this isn't an area I've given any deep thought and a few years away from the series has weakened my recall of it.
I'd assumed during the medal ceremony that Eren received a jolt of future memories when he touched Historia, but unlocking memories was something that had been happened to Eren throughout the manga. It makes sense that the memories in 90 were more future related unlike those relating to the Attack Titan like he'd previously gotten.
If I was to dive into this debate, it would be "both is good". Where touching Historia gave him a glimpse of the future, consuming the FT provided both clarity, confusion and the power to effect change. And I agree with you that the moment with Ramzi provided a face and depth to the horror he'd soon unleash. Mostly I think Isayama left all of this vague and hand-wavey for a reason. We know Eren had visions /Eren didn't like those visions / Eren mucked with the past to impact those visions / Eren scrambled his brain in the process / Must Rumble World. I do wonder if the lack of clarity is because Isayama ran out of time to develop the ideas more fully. There are a lot of things I'd like to press him for answers on.
And yes, Eren has always been a difficult character for me to appreciate, but I did enjoy the wild ride his story provided. It wouldn't have been nearly as interesting a manga without him. I read back through some of my older Eren posts and my emotions run the full spectrum for sure.
Thank you again for the ask. I'm sorry I can't do the answer justice but I really enjoyed reading your thoughts. Once I unbox my volumes, I might give this another read.
Great to see you’re still around after the insurance fraud bust. I knew you had the charisma to bribe your way out.
I have two questions.
One: I remember you saying a while back that if Erwin got the serum he wouldn’t have stopped fighting, and I agree. I can’t remember if you stated your opinion on what he’d be fighting for, but I think it’s safe to say even though Paradis was held back technologically, they were the ones with all the card when compared to the rest of the world. 2 Ackermans, 4 titans in their possession and a queen with royal blood.
I don’t think there’s a world in which Erwin survives and doesn’t use every single one of these factors to his advantage and absolutely wipes the floor with Marley and the rest of their enemies. But there’s a tricky factor in this scenario that I completely overlooked: Eren’s future memories.
Do you think Erwin could have figured out that Eren was clairvoyant, and if so do you think his smarts could have possibly subverted Eren’s fate itself and stopped the rumbling entirely before it even began? (Assuming he knew about Eren’s future memories and his intentions before he was able to touch Zeke). Or do you think Eren’s future memories win over Erwin’s big brains and he rumbles all over Erwin’s fail safe plan to free all Eldians?
Two: What’s your favourite ZaZa sativa or indica
Thanks, I do try to stay out of prison!
My friend, Erwin would not only have had 2 Ackermans, 4 titans in their possession and a queen with royal blood but let's not forget the island had a shit ton of those light stone thingies that would've been a game changer in an early industrial setting like we saw in Marley. I can't believe I forgot what those things were called. Sun stones? Whatever. They'd be a bargaining chip and a reward for any nation willing to get along with the island. Think mideast oil reserve without the carbon footprint.
You wrote: "But there’s a tricky factor in this scenario that I completely overlooked: Eren’s future memories." Was it ever explained what those future memories are? Was it ever made clear? I seem to recall Eren finally settling on his brain being scrambled to the point that he had no idea what reality even was.
My understanding (maybe wrong) is he saw a future he didn't agree with, and so he manipulated his father and himself in the past using paths magic to ensure he'd be able to rumble the world. I've always thought that if Eren had just opened up about what he saw and relied on people more sensible than him, the ending of the manga could've been rainbows and puppies. Instead he pushed everyone away and decided to make all the decisions himself.
I've been positive about Hange's leadership. With their excitement about technology, they were the right person to bring Eldia into the modern age. But Erwin's talents were more strategic. I feel like he'd have stood a better chance at sussing out and stopping the Jaegerist plots.
Thanks for the ask! Please ignore the cobwebs. It's crazy how much I've forgotten. Zaza indica will do that to you. ( <- a joke. I have no idea what you're going on about)
Hi momtaku!! I don't get the second eruri joke with tonight, is it something about like doing things tonight? Can you explain it to me please because I don't think I get it entirely?
Also I think it's even better if people explain jokes when others don't get them, so that everyone can enjoy them! I got your other two dad jokes and really enjoy them! I don't get why people don't like puns because I think they're super funny!!
-Sincerely, your fellow dad pun joke fan
( ps Erwin would look really hot doning puns and more attractive, I bet he could flirt well!)
Oh dear... how to explain? The pun is a misdirection. "Some people call me X, but you can call me…" would usually end with a nickname. But instead of giving a nickname, it ends with “Tonight,” implying "you can call me tonight (on the phone / to hang out)". It’s a cheesy flirt line that pretends to be about names but is actually a playful invitation. Does that make more sense?
I'm glad you enjoy puns, and the headcanon that Erwin would be a complete goof when it comes to his humor.
Thanks for the ask!

Is your name Earl Gray? Because you look like a "Hot Tea".
I'm always surprised when reading the manga, (its been a while) that you can interpret Levi codename in the coup d'etat as "Erwins little angel". I'm recently new to this fandom so I was wondering how the fandom reacted and how it came to be (interpreted) at that time, etc.: how did it get translated and how people arrived to that interpretation.
Thanks!
Hi!
I have to say that I'm not actually long enough in fandom to have been around when this came out (I only joined in mid-2017 if I remembered correctly), and so I would really need to throw this question to @momtaku and @lostcauses-noregrets and anyone else who was around at the time who wants to chip in to answer this! :D
But regardless, I would like to put forward a thing from a japanese source:

Thank you for your ask, and sorry that I couldn't be of more help! :S
(Usual disclaimers apply :)
I was in the Tumblr fandom in 2014, but I was today years old when I learned this was even a thing. I checked my blogposts from Oct 2014 and my focus was squarely on the reveals involving Grisha and Shadis. In fairness, in Oct 2014 I was not a fan of Erwin or Eruri (gasp, I know) so I could've easily missed any OG discussion around "Erwin's Little Angel".
In my volume readthrough a year later I was very charmed by the nicknames being tossed about, but still unaware of any discussion surrounding it.
My volumes are in storage for a few more weeks but I'm going to take a look at chapter 62 when I get my hands back on them so I can see what my original version says. It's really fun to learn this cool little gem after all this time 💕
While I have nothing, @darlingpoppet was in the Japanese and English Eruri fandom back in Oct 2014. Maybe she knows if there was any fandom reaction back in the day??
I was about to be like “so here’s what the ERL Round-Up blog has to say about it” but then I read Tsuki’s original answer more carefully and that’s the exact source they brought up too 🤡
Anyway yeah, according to my best possible recollection (which you may have to take with a huge grain of salt because my memory tends to suck) I sort of remember the name was a curiosity at the time (at least in Japanese fandom but possibly English fandom too), but since エルゲルヒェン/Ergelchen wasn’t a real word in any language it was sort of shrugged off as a misspelling or just Isayama on some bullshit (as usual). I think it may have even been someone in English-speaking fandom (with knowledge of German) who first posited the “Erwin’s little angel” theory? But either way, I didn’t see the widespread embrace of it from Eruri fandom (either Japanese- or English-speaking) until years later. My mind wants to place it around the time season 3 of the anime was airing, when that arc was getting adapted (2018-2019ish?) which possibly makes sense since then there was renewed interest in the uprising arc, especially since Isayama had them change a lot of it in the adaptation (something about him being dissatisfied with how he executed that arc in the manga.)
Honestly searching it up on Twitter could’ve probably verified exactly when it was, because the original theory and the initial discussion/excitement over it was posted there (I was definitely there for all that) but I can’t even search my own account for shit anymore because SOMEONE fucking broke the website 🙄 I did archive my account before the takeover though, so if it happened before 2022 (which it definitely did) maybe I can comb through that data and see if I find anything!
Hope this helps for now! <3
Hope it's okay to include your tags as well because I think it contains vital information :D
I might as well take the opportunity to throw in the few meagre scraps that I dug up.
This one, if I understood it as the time stamp correctly, is last updated 2015年01月24日 02:28 and does think that it is a mistake of Engelchen (that it explains as having the nuance of "angel-chan" XDD)
And then there's this tweet that does conclude that it is perhaps it is Ergelchen after all and speculating that might really be a pun on Engelchen to make Erwin's little angel:
[x]
In other words, pretty much as ERL Round-up described the situation XDD
Certainly the dates match up with what you think as well and likewise, I definitely found people talking about it by 2021, although similarly it would be impossible now to dig up those receipts either... :(
But this certainly gives a much clearer picture of how things evolved, definitely a slow burn with this one, and I hope the original asker sees this because I do think we have a clearer picture now of the situation.
Thank you very much for your help and knowledge on the subject! ٩( ᐛ )و

Happy Halloween! Oh, it's nice to see you're still here, I read your articles and really liked that, but assumed that this was an inactive blog since you didn't post anything lately. :) Nice to know! I read that there are some smartpass stories that appanretly got lost, d you know if there is a new translated masterlist that contains all of them or some transalted ones got lost when the blogs got deleted or never got translated in the first place? Apparently ihere's a smartpass where erwin and nile are in a carriage together and Erwin says he didn't feel comfortable with the lavish food since tehre are sill people during their duty outside. I was looking forward to reading it but couldn't find it, only references to it. Also how do you feel about Erwin, do you also think he would've loved to go and explore the world, just like his AOT Afterparty drama cd/game. :) Enjoy your week!
Thank you for the kind message. I keep intending to come back more meaningfully because I do really miss the community. My active tumblr days are something I treasure since it allowed me to meet so many amazing people. One of these days I hope I'll do more than lurk again.
It would take some digging to remember where we left off on the smartpass stories. At one time we had a list. People who had physical copies of the smartpass booklet translated them or at least, like you said, gave us summaries. But if I've learned anything from @tsuki-no-ura it's that translations are hard and time consuming and finding the source material is difficult. She might be more informed about the story you mentioned.
But yes, of course Erwin would've loved to explore the world! I know i've said this a million times, but I'm forever grateful to the fan fiction writers for making that happen 💕
Thanks for the ask! I hope you too enjoy your week.
