Me: ugh I feel like a failure. I'm not good at anything. Not really. I just never stop stumbling forward. I'm too stupid to know when to quit and it looks like winning.
Brain:....I dunno that's kinda cool.

I think I'm going to make some of the saris I've thrifted into gored, maybe pleated or gathered skirts. Or maybe use some of the larger yardages I've got in my stash. Or both!
I had considered circle skirts but then I would lose the selvages. Which even on the simplest sari would be a damn shame.
I'll need some wide elastic for the waist, maybe. I might try a fitted waist. I'd like a broad waist band. Hmmmmm
So, over on Twitter I saw this post,
and it was funny looking at the comments and how the same word had so many variations depending on where you lived, especially with slang.
But then later I was reading fanfiction and it was a good fic and the characters weren’t OOC or anything but, there was this one word that clearly the author of that fic uses but those characters would definitely not, to the point where it annoyed me because appart from this one word, the character was perfect, and then I’d run into this word and it would ruin the image in my head.
And it got me thinking like, should we pedantic about which variations of words you use, despite the fact that everyone still understands exactly what you’re saying and it all still makes sense, just to have perfect characterisation.
I mean like, I am Australian, so I say mum not mom but if I wrote a fic with an American character I’d have them say mom because that’s in character and the accent and vowel sounds are different.
But we also say colour not color so do I then swap it to color despite it being pronounced pretty much the same and everyone knowing what I mean?
For example if I had Luke Skywalker say that he likes the colour of Leia’s dress, would that annoy some potential reader as much as I got annoyed at the word that was misused in the fic I read today?
What about Yes? There are so many variations of Yes. Yes, Yeah, Yep, Yea, Ya, Nah Yeah, No Yeah, Yup, Yaaaassss; without getting into Ok, Of Course, Sure, etc.
For example in the MCU:
If we’re staying in character, there is no way in hell that Pepper Potts, the most eloquent lady of the MCU would say, Ya. She’d say Yes to strangers and aquaintences and occasionally Yeah or Yep to Tony or Rhodey or Happy. Not Ya or Yas or even Yea.
Tony Stark in the MCU has said Yes, Yep, Yup, Yeah, and Yeah-huh (which was some weird combo of Yeah and Uh-huh), he has not said Ya or Yas.
Scott Lang on the other hand probably would say Ya and Luis has probably said Yas (but I could be wrong, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Ant-Man).
Now it’s not like if someone wrote Pepper Potts saying Ya, I’d immediately go to the comments and be like “Pepper Potts would never say Ya! Change it!” because that’s pretty damn rude and it’s not really that big of a problem overall and it’s not like I have no idea what’s she’s saying now that a different word has been used.
Also fanfic authors aren’t paid (except in our love but that doesn’t really count), so we don’t harass them if they’ve used a word we don’t like or spelt something wrong or made a grammatical error. They don’t have professional editors so if they miss something then that’s not their fault.
But it would take away from my experience as a reader because now I’m sitting there debating to myself on whether or not Pepper would ever say Ya. Maybe she has said it in the comics? I haven’t read any Iron Man comics I wouldn’t know. Maybe she did say it to Tony once in the movies and I’ve forgotten? and then I’d end up sitting there thinking to myself trying to remember her saying it, rather than focusing on the story.
Anyway that’s just my weird ruminations. Let me know if there’s any particular word you’re seen misused for a particular character. Does anyone else get pedantic about this or does it not bother you.
Me, an adult: *seriously working* writing drabbles on the side after a call.
Me, thirsty af: you have a love triangle you written on that fic right? Why dont we have a consented threesome between Scott, Reyes and Dirk! Oh! and Massani maybe Gil too an O*gy!!!
Me, adult: NOOOOO, STOOOOP
Me, thirsty af: But you made a threesome before, what would stop you from doing it now. You have creative juices stocked up and *sifts through notes* you have some of them drafted already.
Me: *squirms and internally screaming*
That moment when you find a fic that sounds like it is going to be just perfect, the one that you have been looking for for ages, and then you notice there is that one tag. A ship you don’t ship, someone bottoms you only prefer to top, it’s A/B/O, whatever- something you just don’t read. And there is the fight with yourself that goes like:
Brain: Too bad, time to keep searching
You: Well, maybe it will be just minor....I could just skip over it
Brain: ....what. No, you see that tag? you don’t read fic with this! you know this!
You: But, but, but....it sounds so awesome other than that though : (
Brain: And maybe you will be able to find something similar later without that one thing....but you really don’t like this one thing so it won’t be this one
You: I could give it a try???
Brain *forcing you to keep scrolling*: No. You will end up exiting out of it asking me why I let you click on it, and just drive the poor author’s hit count up without leaving a kudos or comment. You have learned this before- and they tagged for it so you would be the only one to blame.
I am currently having an internal debate as to whether or not to go see the US Tour of Les Mis either later this month or in March (depending which theatre I went to, it'd be a 5-to-6 hour drive).
[Or I could just wait and hope it comes next season to one of the closer theatres that are about 20 minutes to 2 hours away...and just see Love Never Dies in June.]
Does anyone have any thoughts on the current cast for Les Mis? Any thoughts in general?
Like on one hand I want to post up my art and stuff but on the other I am still very early in the whole ‘learning to draw’ thing so my stuff is still very rough and not that good yet, but if I post it I’ll have a bit more motivation to doodle so it’s like.
?
?????
Does anyone else have favourite socks and you always have an internal debate as to whether to wear them? Cuz you know that they’ll get dirty and you’ll have to wait til laundry day to wear them again? Is today worthy of my favourite socks??
