Are the libdems heading for a constitutional crisis?

The letter to Nick Clegg from 50 former Lib Dem parliamentary candidates urging him to stick to party policy on welfare reform could turn out to be of profound significance.

To stick to party policy he would have to support the Lords' amendments to the welfare reform bill, and that would mean going against Chris Grayling's commitment to overturn the Lords' votes.

But if Clegg doesn't stick to party policy, as pretty much unanimously endorsed by the Autumn party conference, then he could trigger a constitutional crisis. Internal democracy is one of the party's real strengths - and a characteristic that differentiate the party from the other main parties. If Clegg rides roughshod over the wishes of the party (even if, technically, he has a get out clause that allows him to), then he may well have a serious problem on his hands.
