Just finished reading Jean Edward Smith's 2012 biography of Eisenhower. Enjoyed it but thought the writing was too 'factual' and event driven - and necessarily attempted to cover a great deal of territory in less than 1000 pages. Some quick impressions - Eisenhower's career benefitted from a lot of luck and his ability to deal with people and ambiguity. He was an excellent Supreme Commander but a dreadful on-the-ground commander of troops. An adroit and popular politician who outwitted the McCarthyists and Republican isolationists.
Elizabeth Farrelly - she's right about resident groups but has strange ideas about the planning system - seeing it as an instrument of social policy. It's really about the setting up systems to facilitate the efficient use of scarce land and processes for dealing with negative and positive externalities associated with land uses. Elizabeth appears to want a strong central planner: 'Rather, they should embody a shared view of what is best for us all. It's not rocket science, but it must at least attempt a God-view.' But no such 'shared view' exists.
But 2011 census had population at 21.5 million. Page 17 current AFR.
