how difficult is it to internally transfer from one school to another after being accepted? I also was talked to about by a student guide on a tour of the school that there was some sort of program that had a bridge/minor type thing in film studies for MCC students, do you know what that is or where to find more info on it? thank you!
The difficulty entirely depends on what school or program you’re trying to transfer into. For example, Stern has a very high retention rate, which means that students don’t tend to leave the school. That, when paired with how competitive admission already is, means that it’s difficult to transfer into Stern. When I applied to Gallatin, on the other hand, my advisor told me that if you have a solid GPA and an idea for what you want to study that isn’t offered elsewhere, you stand a good chance of getting in.
As for the film studies minor, there are a couple of options. First, there’s the minor in the Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology that works with Steinhardt, Stern, and Tisch. Tisch also offers Cinema Studies and Film as cross-school minors.
Hi! Can you tell me about your experience on transferring from lsp to Gallatin? I'm a freshman in lsp and I'm thinking of transferring to Gallatin to do computer science + marketing in my junior year. Is it possible? And will I be able to graduate on time?
It’s totally possible. Before I figured out that I wanted to go into Gallatin, I spoke to my advisor a lot about the different options that I had. I also spoke to the Gallatin transfer advisor at the time who was absolutely wonderful and helped answer a lot of my questions. I really suggest talking to both your advisor and the Gallatin transfer advisor, as they can really help you figure out how feasible transferring would be for you and help plan out what you’d have to do to get there.
Basically, the transfer advisor told me that, as long as you had a plan of how to answer why you’d want to transfer to Gallatin and you had a strong GPA (3.5~), then you had a pretty good chance of getting that transfer. Having an idea of what you want to study that isn’t offered anywhere else (like computer science and marketing) is really a big part of what you need to get accepted.
I also had plenty of time to complete everything that I needed to in order to graduate; I even studied abroad. Basically, in the spring of my sophomore year, I went abroad and took a Gallatin class in order to get started on the required credits before I got accepted as a transfer. I actually ended up being able to drop one of my classes senior year because I had enough credits already, so, as long as you plan out your schedule well, you should be totally fine to graduate on time. :)
Can you switch your major after you've been accepted? How long does that process take?
Yes and it entirely depends. In most cases, you don’t need to declare a major/concentration until the end of your sophomore year, so you have some time to get it figured out. If you want to switch to a major that is in your school, it’s usually not so difficult. If you want to switch to a major in another school, however, you have to apply as an internal transfer.
For example, I applied as an internal transfer to Gallatin as I was ending LSP and didn’t want to go into CAS anymore and I got accepted. My freshman year roommate also applied as an internal transfer from CAS to Stern and didn’t get accepted, so she stayed in CAS. The difficulty varies from program to program and depends highly on how popular and competitive the program is. I also know a girl who applied to transfer from CAS to Tisch, performed an audition, and was accepted. So, if you apply to a program that requires a portfolio submission or an audition, you will have to complete that as well.
