Why Going to Networking Events Can Change Your Business and Career
Networking events are a potent means of creating genuine, enduring professional ties in the fast-paced digital world of today. Whether you're a corporate professional, freelancer, job seeker, or entrepreneur, business networking events offer beneficial chances for development, cooperation, and exposure.
Networking Events: What Are They?
Networking events are planned get-togethers, whether in person or virtually, where professionals may network, exchange expertise, and look into possible business or career prospects. These gatherings include business mixers, trade exhibits, seminars, conferences, and industry get-togethers.
People may remain up to speed on industry trends, grow their professional network, and discover fresh opportunities that might not present itself through online interactions alone by going to these events.
Leading Advantages of Networking Events
1. Establish Sincere Professional Connections
Face-to-face communication builds rapport and trust. A genuine discussion, as opposed to a cold email or social media post, establishes a long-lasting relationship that may result in collaborations, mentorships, or recommendations.
2. Obtaining New Possibilities
Many people use chats at networking events to locate clients, business partners, or job prospects. You may directly access chances by being present at gatherings of decision-makers and leaders in the business.
3. Keep Up with Industry Developments
The majority of networking events feature seminars, keynote addresses, or expert panels. These meetings assist you in keeping up with the most recent advancements, instruments, and technologies in your industry.
4. Boost Confidence and Communication
You may get better at communicating by asking questions, sharing your views, and participating in discussions. You will get more self-assurance in professional situations with consistent practice.
5. Make Your Personal Brand Stronger
Attending networking events on a regular basis promotes brand awareness for your company and yourself. It establishes you as a knowledgeable and involved specialist in your field.
Advice for a Successful Networking Event
Here's how to get the most out of an event you're attending soon:
Establish Specific Goals: Whether your goal is to meet certain individuals, learn something new, or obtain leads, know what it is.
Practice your elevator pitch by providing a succinct, concise synopsis of your background and area of expertise.
Actively Listen: Don't take over discussions. Be genuinely interested in other people.
Make it simple for folks to get in touch with you later by bringing business cards or a digital contact app.
Follow Up Within 48 Hours: Write a personalized email or connect on LinkedIn with a thank-you message.
Virtual and Hybrid Networking Events
Many events are becoming hybrid or entirely virtual due to the growth of digital media. Attendees may network internationally using these forms without having to travel. The secret to success is the same whether you're in person or online: be genuine, be inquisitive, and follow up.
In conclusion
The capacity to forge genuine, meaningful connections is what gives professional networking events their potency. In an increasingly screen-dominated world, making an effort to interact with people in person, or even via a virtual conversation, may have a significant impact on your professional or commercial path.

Connecting Cultures: DSU provides community the opportunity to connect with international students
DSU international students Faariah Khan, Ayesha Ehsan, Manal Butt, and Zain Imran with their Dickinson Friendship Family hosts Margaret and Larry Marcusen in the fall of 2016.
This coming fall, Dickinson State University will host exchange students from across the globe who are studying at DSU and learning about life and culture in the United States, and western North Dakota.
Three students from Pakistan, four from South Korea, two from Japan and one each from Germany and Tunisia will spend either one or two semesters on the campus of Dickinson State attending classes, completing internships and participating in extracurricular activities.
During their time here, most international students also volunteer within the campus and Dickinson communities. In the past, students have assisted with International Education Week, Taste of Nations, Homecoming and International Club events, given cultural presentations at Global Table events and have volunteered in local elementary schools with the Best Friends Mentoring Program of Dickinson.
“Students choose to study in the United States for many reasons. Though they are primarily looking for a quality education, they also want to experience life in America,” said Perzen Polishwalla, director of International Programs at DSU. “For most international students this is their first time in the United States. Their experiences here not only shape their views of Dickinson State University and the community but of the U.S. as a whole.”
Dickinson State works to pair each student with a Friendship Family in the community. Similar to a host family, without the housing and financial responsibilities, Friendship Families are encouraged to organize activities for the international students they are paired with.
Whether that be inviting students to family gatherings, holiday celebrations or community events or simply making arrangements to have them over for dinner, these relationships encourage cross-cultural learning and allow both the family and students to build lifelong connections and lasting memories.
These arrangements are a great way to facilitate personal interactions amongst people from a variety of cultural backgrounds while providing the student and community with an enjoyable and educational experience.
“It is crucial that we share our ideals and values and way of life with each other to foster greater understanding and become more accepting of people who speak a different language, have different thoughts and views,” said Polishwalla. “Meanwhile, exchanges not only mean students coming here to learn about the U.S. but it also means that we can learn about the world and impart that knowledge at home.”
Gerrit Koelling, a German exchange student, was personally selected by a German Member of Parliament from a highly competitive applicant pool to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a fellowship funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Congress. Koelling will spend the fall semester studying in Dickinson and will complete an internship in New York this spring!
Students from Pakistan Rija Nazir, Maryam Zahid and Arslan Khowaja are sponsored by the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program will attend Dickinson State for the fall 2017 semester while Tunisian student Dhia Rzig, a participant of the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program, will enjoy a full academic year at DSU.
These programs, both implemented by a non-profit education and global development entity called IREX, are highly competitive with only 100 students selected from around 9,000 applicants for each program each year. In order to host IREX exchange students, DSU’s Office of International Programs had to submit an application to IREX as well as the U.S. Department of State. Dickinson State was selected to be a host university in the fall of 2016 and has since continued the commitment.
DSU also has exchange partnerships with Duksung Women’s University located in Seoul, South Korea, and Nagoya University located in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Japan. Students attend DSU through these agreements as a type of exchange study abroad experience. They select a school from a list of exchange universities that their school partners with and typically come for one semester or one academic year.
Japanese students Rayra Cardinale Arashiro Pinto and Ayaka Ito and South Korean students Hye Jin Kim, Soyeon An, Junghee Kim and Sehui Eom all chose to spend their study abroad experience in Dickinson and will arrive this fall.
While these students are busy making arrangements for their international studies, the Office of International Programs is hard at work preparing for their arrival. Along with managing their housing assignments and helping them register for classes, part of organizing their time here involves pairing them with local Friendship Families.
“From speaking with past participants I know that they have truly enjoyed their experience with the program and that it helped them grow not only as a student, but as an individual,” said DSU’s International Student Service Coordinator Amy Rassier. “The students were often outside their comfort zones, but said that experience challenged them and helped them to learn and grow a lot.”
If you or someone you know is interested in connecting with an international student by being a Friendship Family this year, please contact Perzen Polishwalla in the Office of International Programs to apply or for more information. She can be reached at [email protected] or 701-483-2340.
