Please accept this letter as my intention to run for the position of Head Girl, for the year commencing September 1979. When I sat down to pen this letter of intent, I considered two main questions; What does the role of Head Girl entail? Why am I the right candidate for the position?
The role of Head Girl is one of utmost importance within the school, with the head team playing a crucial role in the smooth day to day management of students, through teamwork with and leadership of the prefects. A team is, after all, only as successful as the people leading it and must be led by example, with all the qualities necessary for the team to perform to the very best of their ability; communication, focus, hard work, support, and commitment. A breakdown of one of these leads to a breakdown within the team and, consequently, a breakdown in the aforementioned day to day running of the school.
It is also my belief that the Head Girl must be firm but fair, in order that she may provide a warm, supportive environment for the students of the school to flourish, whilst also ensuring the rules are upheld. Providing an environment for not only the prefects to develop their leadership and teamwork skills, but also for the entire student body to thrive in the safety and comfort of their school knowing they have the best support on hand for anything they might need is, in my opinion, one of the most important parts of the Head Girl role. She must be honest, inspiring, confident, empathetic, flexible, good at delegation, passionate, creative, kind, fair, and be accountable. That is, be ready to take responsibility for any shortfalls and be able to learn from them.
Taking all of that into account, I believe I am an exceptional candidate for the position of Head Girl for this upcoming year, and am ready to rise up to the challenges the position will begin; to learn more about myself as a person and grow as I lead the school through a successful school year. I have always been an active member of the school community in roles that display my commitment, teamwork, organisation and planning, leadership, patience, and responsibility. Not only that, but it has helped me become a well known and well respected student in our school community.
I am an active member of both Charms Club and Duelling Club, and believe I play an integral role in the latter, bringing my years of tutoring experience to help members of the club reach their potential and perform to the best of their ability, guiding them with patience and understanding, but ensuring I push them when it is necessary. It is my wish to be Duelling Club president next year, and of Charms Club too if possible. I have also been a prefect this school year 1978 to 1979, a position that has helped me grow and hone the skills I mentioned above, preparing me for the role of Head Girl. I have proven through this role that I am responsible and reliable, that I am understanding and fair, but that I can provide a firm hand when necessary; this was particularly important during the school curfew of last year, in which I was an essential part of ensuring students did not break curfew and stayed safe. I have also learnt a lot about working in a team, and how important it is to keep to your commitments when part of one, but that flexibility is also required in order to ensure the smooth running of the team. I was always on hand to pick up extra patrols in the face of sickness or any other such emergencies.
From October 1977 to January 1979 I was a valued member of the Junior Witches’ League, an organisation that stresses the importance of friendship, sisterhood, and charity. On many occasions I assisted the League in giving back to our local community here in Hogsmeade. The Junior Witches’ League was an indelible experience for me; during my time there I made important friendships I shall value forever, and saw the importance of working together to achieve a shared goal. Unfortunately, due to a rise in people who required my skills in tutoring I had to make the difficult decision to quit the JWL, so that I could provide my fellow students with the valuable support they needed for their upcoming exams. Despite this, the things I learnt during my time with the JWL - teamwork, communication, support, and friendship - will stay with me forever and, I believe gave me valuable skills necessary for the role of Head Girl. I would also not wish for my early exit from the JWL to make you doubt I can handle the responsibility of Head Girl along with my other commitments; not only have I learnt and developed so much this year in order that I have the skills necessary to make the commitment to the role of Head Girl, I will be swapping my prefect duties for Head Girl duties. Of course, the latter bears more responsibility, but knowing I can bring all the skills I listed above to the role and that I’m exceptionally organised and good at delegating, I can assure you I will run a smooth, well-oiled team.
Last but not least, I have been tutoring since my time at Cornwall County Day School, a role I bring passion, enthusiasm, dedication, patience, and kindness to. There is not much I find more rewarding than providing a safe space for students to gain an understanding of something they were previously struggling to. As a senior member in the tutoring team, I have again proven my reliability and also shown I can delegate to other members of the team, ensuring all the duties within it are carried out well. I help to organise the timetables of tutors and their students, and assign new students to whomever is the best fit for that particular student. Alongside this, I feel I go above and beyond in my duties as a tutor, always being on hand to provide extra support outside of scheduled sessions when necessary and as not only an ear for any students struggling to meet their potential, but also a source of encouragement. I feel I have helped many students believe in themselves and their abilities; if I was to get the position of Head Girl, I believe that is a quality in me that is indispensable.
I would like to finish off by saying that I am a Straight O student, one who always brings enthusiasm to the classroom and participates well in class discussions. I am well respected and liked by both my peers and my professors, meaning I will certainly be able to offer a good bridge between students and staff. I was raised with the view that kindness makes it easier for someone to open the door when they most need it, and even when I need to be firm, I will always too be kind, in order to make sure any student in this school feels they can come to me whenever they need support, whatever that support might be. It is easier to be motivated and hardworking in school if you are content in your environment, which is something I know I can provide, given that I am known for my approachability, and as already stressed, my kindness. I am ready to rise to the challenging and rewarding nature of the role so that every student may flourish next year, and hope I will be afforded the chance to do so.
