Second Semester

Writing this at 1 in the morning because I can't sleep yet.

Amazing how last year when I started out my program I was so worried I wouldn't be able to cope and catch up. Now look, I'm on the second semester. Going through workload, quizzes, activities, assignments, exams, and everything in between. I'm proud of myself. I have gotten through days where I never thought I would get through.

16.10.2020 // last exams done. my celebration was cut short with 34 new cases in my hometown, meaning borders have closed to South Australia meaning my mum and sister can’t leave and i can’t get back in. at this stage, i don’t think ill be able to see them for christmas. im having a hard time coping with this, my state was doing basically the best in the world (besides New Zealand) covid wise so this is just a massive stab in the back for us. im now stranded in canberra for the summer so yeah...that’s that update. but, at least the weather will be okay and there’s quite a few people sticking around ANU for the break. stay safe and 1.5m apart 💫 on the left is a picture of the Berlin Wall out the front of my work, a picture of freedom which seems very real and relevant to me right now

First semester!!

Hello everyone, I don’t really post or write anything on here but it would be great to start doing that so I can share my journey as a college student (or just anything about my life). I’m an incoming first year college student and I’m going to be taking up International Studies which is a very interesting program for me. I’m really excited to start but at the same time anxious since everything will be online. Will try to keep writing about my journey on here but thank you for reading!! :)

Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa’s report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

The students took the Collegiate Learning Assessment (which is designed to measure gains in critical thinking, analytic reasoning and other "higher level" skills taught at college) at various points before and during their college educations, and the results are not encouraging. The research found that after two years of college, 45% of students learned little to nothing. After four years, 36% of students learned almost nothing. The research then goes on to find a direct relationship between rigor and gains in learning and the most significant aspect to point out is that students who study by themselves for more hours each week gain more knowledge - while those who spend more time studying in peer groups see diminishing gains, and this supports the foundamental aspect of autonomus learning in education.
