the internet / globalized media has altered language in so many fascinating ways btw. like. linguistics as a field has historically focused on spoken/signed language, since writing has historically been more formal and therefore more removed from the ways humans Actually Talk.

but with the internet, we are seeing spontaneous communication in written form, meaning that entirely new stuff pops up and we're having to question that maxim. (a lot of these papers are english-specific, sorry) language-specific laughter markers. quotative be+like being used more generally. weaseling around algorithms by avoiding keywords. leetspeak & lolspeak. hashtags being used for meta-commentary. escalating capitalization. tumblr shitposting and intentional misspelling. semantics of face emojis.

it's SO cool to see how quickly language changes and to be an active part of that change !!!!!

Hoping -- probably in vain -- that the Twitter & Reddit migrations to Tumblr cause someone, somewhere, to figure out a really cool ... I don't want to call it social media. Internet communication platform? Idea? That does the best features of all those, and makes it bloody open source. Mastodon alas seemed a flash in the pan, just like Pillowfort :(

I mean whatever drives mass adoption of a platform is a mystery anyway. Dreamwidth didn't fail, exactly, but it's *far* more niche than LJ ever was.

The real problem, I think, is that creation tools & server hosting have become so much more inaccessible & difficult to use. Gen Z isn't brought up with the background knowledge they'd need as background radiation like Gen X and Millennials did. Most Gen Z doesn't even know what a computer directory is. But those of us who have the background knowledge don't have the time or money or brains. Most of the people I knew in high school or college who were building their own websites now work for Google (or in one case left Google for Archive.org bless 'em)

We all want a change but none of us have the tools or time or money.

Over the last decade of talking to people online one of the most interesting things about current day communication is how I can talk to people for years and I 1) will barely remember their username, 2) will not know their actual name, 3) often won’t know their gender, 4) will remember what we talked about despite not knowing their name, gender, url, etc. and 5) will recognize them by their syntax, vocabulary, and semantics.

The Final Countdown!!

My internet course is coming to an end and I have learned so much. While I have little hair left and am certain I have had at least ten mental breakdowns, I am very grateful for the continued communication from the instructor for the course. I had a lot of technical issues but she was more than willing to do whatever she could to help me understand. This course had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I would watch videos, get the gist of the assignment, and get started. Just as I got into it I would come across and issue. After many many emails, several zoom meetings, and multiple conversations, we tackled the problem. While I may not be getting the super star award in web design I am glad I took this course to give me another skill for life. I will say I won't becoming a digital anything but I did enjoy making the site when it all came together. I will leave with this. If you are thinking about taking a course in something you are not familiar with, do it. You may not have any hair left as I do not, but the skills you learn are tangible and something you can carry with you the rest of your life.
