Thoughts on Tina Fey vs. The Internet
In what has infuriated some, instead of becoming more politically correct, Tina Fey and Co. doubled down. In fact, there is an entire episode that appears to be Fey & Co. poking the bear, pouring gas on the fire, whatever you want to call it. Tumblr now has a series of disbelieving rants that the show would do such a thing.
She has said, “There’s a real culture of demanding apologies, and I’m opting out of that.” This angers some people who are surprised that she would be so disconnected. I don’t think she’s disconnected, she just doesn’t agree.
I get that the younger generation is trying to establish a culture of respect, and I think that’s admirable. This is a generation that grew up hearing teachers, school officials, etc. say “That’s not okay.” I am a teacher, I know how our dialogue has changed in the classroom. It’s just that many of us DIDN’T grow up hearing that. In fact when I was in college, we were quite obsessed with anything that might be a slippery slope to fascism (because what is college without taking every opportunity to use the word fascism). Tina Fey is of that generation.
That’s not to say that pointing out offensive representations isn’t a valid thing to do. It is. The whole thing with uber WASP Jaquelyne secretly being a Native American who grew up on the Rez, is clearly meant to push the envelope for the sake of pushing. While I think the importance of Dong being Kimmy’s primary romantic love interest and object of her desire CANNOT be overstated, there were jokes there that were definitely asshole-ish.
Unfortunately, the problem with internet rage is that it frequently presents itself as someone demanding people conform to one acceptable standard…which just supports that slippery slope view. And the last big Kimmy Schmidt complaint completely undermined the others by being, as the kids say, problematic. People complained about the character of Titus being an over the top stereotype of gay men. People really went full in internet rage with it. However, Tituss the actor is playing a version of himself. So then the people who complained about his “representation” looked incredibly intolerant. Whoops (hence the, “I offended myself” joke.) So Fey responded with an episode that wrapped all three of the major complaints into one, like a Panda Pop combo balloon. Extra flamboyant Titus performs as a Japanese person in a play about a geisha, and the internet gets angry. She could not have sent a clearer message. It's been interesting to see how people react when they reach that episode. Some think it's funny, some are furious, some don't quite get it. Quite frankly I found it beyond clever, but I have great admiration for those who can take a swing creatively.
