My Internship

While I was abroad, one of my requirements was to complete a semester-long internship, which I did at a university's International Relations Office. It was a bit strange at first, because the office usually didn't take exchange students as interns, and the intern they did have had been there longer than I'd been living in Brazil. Add to that that I am already pretty shy at first, and it's pretty easy to see how all of us had to adapt to the situation.

Of course, everyone has to adapt to new situations, so I was sure everything would be okay. And it was. I was worried at first that they wouldn't like me because of the circumstances that led me to working for them (it was a pretty last-minute ordeal) but they welcomed me with open arms. My boss, an incredible woman, gave me both her work and cell numbers the day we met and made it clear that I could contact her if I ever needed anything. The rest of the people in the office were just as friendly and willing to help as she was.

It was great to get that sense of security mere moments after moving to one of the biggest cities in Latin America (Sao Paulo). When I met the group I'd be working with, I was still set up in a room in a hostel, looking for rooms in condos that I could rent out (half my possessions were still in Rio Preto with my old roommate), so knowing that I at least had someone to ask about the areas I was looking into was a huge relief. Their helpfulness with these kinds of things went far beyond that time too; they were the first people I went to to ask about travel destinations around the country and places to go in the city.

It wasn't long after I started working at the office that I started noticing the major cultural differences that there are between an office in the US and an office in Brazil. While I'm sure there were plenty more, there are 3 majors differences that stuck in my mind:

Dress code: Here, business-casual is dress pants, heels and a nice shirt or blouse for girls. Where I worked, that wasn't really the case. Jeans (a definite no-no for the standard US office) were an office staple. I'm pretty sure the only people I ever saw in typical US-style business clothing were the higher-up administrators that doubled as professors. But for the rest of us, coming in in American business-casual would have been just as strange as coming in in shorts.

Building rapport: At my job in Brazil, phone calls and emails that started a conversation had about a paragraph's worth of small talk before actually getting to the point of the e-mail. I've spoken to people about jobs here where they've said "After hours/at the end of the day, you'd email the person you're working with about more personal things to build rapport". But in my experience, those conversations about family, friends, etc. were had before those business conversations. My boss there told me once that you had to know your audience when sending even the briefest email. "If you send an American an email asking questions about their day and their life, they'll wonder when you'll get to the point; if you don't do it with a Brazilian, you will come off as rude".

Lunch: Like anywhere else, lunch is when you really get to connect with your coworkers in Brazil. Only, lunch starts at 12 and ends at 2ish. And they take it seriously. At 11:30 every day, my coworkers would start talking about where they wanted to go that day. By 11:50, everything was getting wrapped up, because noon was the latest they would walk out of there to go to lunch. If there was time left over at the end, they'd go to a bakery and get dessert and some coffee. But rarely did they ever cut lunch short, and for good reason: it was their time to bond, relax and have fun. It was their time to go from coworkers to friends.

I also learned a good bit at my job about the job itself. Working in an international office, I interviewed exchange program candidates, helped write program grants, researched current programs and went to a British Council convention, to name a few things. I also completed a capstone project over the importance of foreign language in the university system.

Overall, it was a great experience. I not only learned a lot of things specific to my job, but also how to work in an office environment and in a foreign environment. Though I was an intern from another country and didn't have much of a background in international relations, I never felt that way. I was treated as if I was on the same level as everyone else and I always felt that my opinion was valued, which helped boost my confidence a lot and make my time at my internship an incredible experience.

Departing and Arriving

There's something really marvelous about airports - and it's not the freshly maxed floors or the sky high ceilings. Perhaps it's the conglomeration of stressed travellers that puts your personal stress to shame, or the fact that, in a few hours, your presence in the room will be replaced by countless others forging their ways to new lands. Or perhaps instead, it's the vigilant emotions of excitement and dread that hugs the air like humidity: for every traveler cannot experience one without the other.

It was hard to experience that rush of emotions as I hurried my way through the airport. Saying goodbye to home wasn't difficult, not after having done it for college so many times, and the bustle of moving kept me from really getting the chance to let it sink in. The flight was what every flight is - tiresome, cramped, and an overall awful experience - but the landing was marvelous. Everything from hearing German to reading it built an overwhelming sense of joy. The first thing I see leaving the baggage claim, of course, is a waiter bringing a tray of beers to a table of five, eagerly waiting their main drink. I could not think of a more auspicious sign.

The Germans, they have very straight faces. And they seem to like to look at you - a known foreigner - with a steady gaze, that doesn't flinch when you glance upon it. There isn't an apparent warmth, but that does not mean there is a necessary animosity. It is simply empty air - air that Americans fill up with polite but vacuous formalities. The Germans seem to more or less prefer to leave the air clean.

My host mother, fortunately, likes to talk - both in English and German. She gave me the day off from German speaking, and helped me settle in. Her house is just above a car garage, tucked away just off the main street of Kreuzberg. I spent the day unpacking, walking around the general area, and then happily succumbing to my jet lag.
