“Agent Locke.”

Jameson Locke glanced up from his datapad at the soft beep that indicated the screen on the wall had been remotely activated, and was met with the sight of Vice Admiral Miranda Rennet. Fair skin, sapphire blue eyes and raven-black hair pulled back in a tight bun. Clad in the standard officer’s BDU with an ONI logo on her collar, Rennet was leant back in a chair, a glass wall behind her that looked out over… a cave?

“Ma’am.”

Rennet’s left eyebrow twitched upwards. “Call in your team. There’s been an incident on the planet Andesia.”

Locke’s eyebrows raised. “Andesia? What does ONI want with an independent colony world?”

He paused.

“Y’know what, forget I asked. What’s our mission?”

“A UNSC diplomat was planetside to discuss strengthened relations between Andesia and the UNSC. At 11:33:12 local time, Roman Hayes, the diplomat, left the president of Andesia’s estate and stepped into Laywood Square. At 11:34:02, Roman Hayes was hit by a single sniper round that killed him instantly.”

Locke pursed his lips, sitting his datapad down and crossing his arms. “Any other casualties?”

“Negative,” Rennet replied. “just Hayes. Section II is already calling it a piece of political theatre to show us that we don’t have power on their world, and frankly I agree with them.”

The agent shook his head, pressing himself to his feet and resting his hip on the edge of his desk. “It’s not.”

“Enlighten me, James. I’m just an Admiral, not an Agent.”

“Miranda, since when has anything Section II says ever been anything close to the truth? Andesia is an independent world with little military power. What the hell would they have to gain from assassinating a UNSC diplomat?”

“More attention?” She offered with a shrug.

“Fair enough,” Locke conceded with an inclination of his head. “but I mean politically, militarily. What would they have to gain? If the UNSC wanted to it could just sweep in and cut them all down and they couldn’t do a damn thing. It’s not the Andesian government, it doesn’t make sense.”

Rennet raised her hands, shaking her hands. “Whatever you say, Locke. Wheels up in six hours.”

“Understood.”

File Name: Circumstance Meltdown

Section: Operations

“The core is going critical! It’s going to vaporize the entire fucking city if we don’t do something!”

“The system’s been hijacked, it’s useless! We need to get out of here!”

The two technicians turned from their control panel, running as fast they could. But it wasn’t fast enough. Fire bursting from the walls, the ground trembling, entire sections of corridors collapsing. A roof portion fell apart directly in front of them, sealing their only accessible tunnel out of the main core. One keyed his radio,

“This is O’Brian! Me and Jacks are trapped in the third access corridor! We can’t get out!”

A voice he’d never heard before replied back, smooth and calm.

“This is Omega-One, I copy. Stay calm, gentlemen.”

The two technicians exchanged looks.

“Who?”

“Hey, what the hell is that?!”

The assembled technicians outside the nuclear facility all looked skyward at the sound of engines, and were utterly shocked to see the form of a Winter-Class Prowler descend through the clouds faster than anything they’d ever seen. It weaved through the cliffs leading up to the facility, opening its cargo bay in the process. The Prowler didn’t even stop as 6 forms leaped from the cargo bay into the sky, freefalling a ways before jets on their backs kicked on to let them land. For a moment, the technicians thought they were the vaunted SPARTANs. But no. The logo gave it away. The triangle.

The Office of Naval Intelligence.

All six operatives, fully armored and armed, ran past the technicians and into the building with no hesitation. A few techs bravely tried to dissuade them.

“You’re insane! You’ll die for sure if you go in there!”

Only one responded, voice smooth and calm.

“There are still people inside.”

And then they disappeared inside.

As the rubble started rumbling, the two trapped technicians suspected their death had come.

But then it outright exploded, revealing 6 armored forms. 5 all rushed past them, but one stopped.

“Get out of here, the way is clear.”

It was the same voice from the radio. The technicians tried to speak, but he was already heading after his team. But not before they saw the logo on his shoulder. The triangle. The all-seeing eye.

The Office of Naval Intelligence.

Agent Jameson Locke took a deep breath, before looking down at the overloading reactor.
