Happy #LovingDay! This is Mildred and her husband, Richard Loving. They are a special couple and here's why. At the age of 18, Mildred became pregnant and in June 1958, the couple traveled to D.C. to marry, thereby evading Virginia's Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which made interracial marriage a crime. Based on an anonymous tip, local police raided their home in Central Point, Virginia. They were charged under Section 20-58, a Virginia Code which prohibited interracial couples from being married out of state and returning to Virginia and Section 20-59, which classified their marriage as a felony, punishable by a prison sentence between one to five years. They pled guilty and were sentenced to one year in prison and a sentence suspension if they left Virginia. They moved to D.C. The couple were obviously frustrated and Mildred wrote to Robert F. Kennedy in protest. He referred her to the American Civil Liberties Union which set in motion a series of lawsuits that finally reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court's unanimous decision held interracial marriage prohibition unconstitutional and ended all race based legal restrictions on marriage in the US. The decision was followed by an increase in interracial marriages and is remembered annually on Loving Day, June 12. This case has also inspired restrictions on same sex marriage as unconstitutional. The couple had three children and were happily married until Richard's untimely death in 1975. Mildred passed away in 2008. This couple's fight to love is the reason why many of us are here.
