a flushed face and shortness of breath
pounding in my head
my heart crushes my sternum and jumps onto the floor
when i stand up my legs fall out from under me
now,
i wasn't thinking of you
but i could say i was
couldn't i?

your smile meets your eyes for what must be the first time. starlight refracts and twists into technicolor warmth creates the sound of symphonies building what keeps us going. who knew they would hit it off so well.
thoughts and feelings like i'm speaking from the inside of a fishbowl: nobody can hear me and i'm running out of air
my bones are made of solid steel the pit of my belly is burning coal, melting the iron and turning wood into blackened crumbling ash, small world. we are the same: all burnt up but once something.

as we drove home, it started to rain. and i saw the sun paint the sky into the rainbow sherbet i ate as a child. our star, swallowed by leviathan, waved goodbye in the flavor of cotton candy and a sound like a symphony philharmonic and all-encompassing. the kisses of baby raindrops ran along my back and through my skin until i became a planet comprised of only ocean, color, and sound.
i keep asking if youre okay
why do i expect an honest answer
