To say that Jean was nervous was a huge understatement. The whole thing was weird for her. She’d been married to Clark for two years now and she’d spent more time apart from him than with him. Two months they dated until he announced he was going to join the army and wanted to marry her before she left. She agreed and Jean only had less than a week with him before he went off to war. After two years he was back in her arms, only, sometimes it felt like she was holding a stranger. Letters few and far between over the course of the two years was all she had to hold on to was letters from him. Him talking about the war, how much he loved her and missed her but they never really talked about the things they liked, their hopes and dreams, how they liked their tea or coffee. The mundane things about Clark, Jean didn’t know and he didn’t know about her either. He’d been back for a few days now and once the whole seeing each other thing wore off, there were silences between them. It was almost as if they didn’t know how to act with one another. With dinner coming to an end, Jean smiled at her husband talked about his day. There was a dead silence that passed between them. It was awkward and she didn’t really know what to say. “Mary, the woman I work with, her, uh, husband went off to war. He... he never came back. Said he fell in love with someone there. Some Italian woman and he wasn’t going to come back,” she revealed, wondering if Clark had met anyone there. Two years was a long time not being intimate with someone. “She was pretty broken up about it. I offered to help her take care of the kids every Saturday since she has to work and her mama can’t take care of them.”
