A Letter for The World Statesman Award - SBY

Dear Sir / Madame,

My name is Ika Ayu, I’m one of Indonesian citizen who really appreciates commitments done by Appeal of Conscience Foundation to against offenses on behalf of religion. I’m now working with Jaringan Perempuan Yogyakarta, a network that concerns on women and human right issues in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Few days ago, I read an article about Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who's going to awarded “World Statesman” from Appeal of Conscience Foundation for his works and commitment in tolerance and faith freedom in Indonesia.

But due the condition of Indonesia today that I and many people, especially minority group, directly face in my everyday life, Indonesia seems to get significant threat from intolerance group that use violence. Jogja, a city that stand on the basis of diversity and a place where I’ve been stay for more than 25 years, is also now facing a threat from the growing of those intolerance group.

According to incident that I’m now working with the advocacy, there were 2 big incident which happened in 2012, such as :

-  Demolition of Catholic site named Gua Maria in Giri Wening in May 2012

- Assault and molestation of Irshad Manji discussion at the office of LKiS Foundation in May 2012; I was one of the victim of the assault.

The incident I show above are only few intolerance cases in Yogyakarta, and one thing that draw my attention is that Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as The President of Republic of Indonesia didn’t show any good intention to solve the problems and giving protection to the followers of minority religions and beliefs who are susceptible to be the victim of intolerance.

This situation is not conform to the Constitution Mandate of Republic of Indonesia, The Fundamental Constitution of Republic Indonesia section 28 verse 1: ‘That the freedom to unite and to gather, to state their mind both oral or written are established by law’.

According to the datas about intolerance cases above and the background problems in Indonesia, I may conclude that The President of Republic of Indonesia Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is not appropriate to accept World Statement Award. Due that problems, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is against The Fundamental Constitution of Republic Indonesia (UUD 1945) and during his govern, plenty of intolerance cases have happended. 

The award which is going to be awarded to Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by Appeal of Conscience Foundation is not only not appropriate but also hurts the hearts of intolerance vitims in Indonesia.
