Meadow sat at the edge of the pond, watching the ‘duckling’ swim.

“My name’s Meadow!” she said, quite cheerfully, “what’s your name, lil’ guy?”

Oh, finally!

They finally had a convincing disguise. Something that allowed them to fit in with the rest of the surrounding woodland. This new creature didn't seem frightened of it at all!

Mustering its best quack, the duckling skittered and hopped out of the pond, looking up at the fox kit with wiggling tail feathers.

It seemed to think for a moment, before finally answering,

"Everybody calls me "that thing". I think I'm s'posed to be called a thing!"

She shook as the other approached, remaining hunched down and wary. The vixen seemed to be quite roughed up, having spent the night out in the elements of a harsh storm, trapped.

Her paw had been caught in a wire snare. It was a wonder, really, that her leg wasn't in worse condition. She'd pulled in shock for the first few moments before realizing the reality of the situation and lying down close to mitigate damage, trying to chew the wire apart to no avail.

And now, as the other fox approached, she growled, ears pinning back and fur bristling.

"Get away from me!"

The adolescent vixen crept through the undergrowth as carefully as she could, though it was certainly hard to remain calm when she was inwardly so excited.

She was going to meet her father’s best friend!

Meadow was, admittedly, disappointed that Tod hadn’t told her about Copper, but now she was going to meet him for herself!

She poked her head out of the tall grass behind the fence. She knew this was the place.

Looking around, Meadow didn’t see anything… but she heard loud snoring.

Is that Copper?

She crept a little closer, slipping through the fence, and slunk up to Chief’s barrel.

“Psst! Hey… are you Copper?” she whispered, completely unaware of the extreme danger she was putting herself in.

There came a short sniffle from a snorting snout as it raised within the barrel's depths — The sound of a tired mongrel, no doubt. Groggy, and at first unaware of who he may have been speaking to, Chief stretched out his paws, claws scoring at the soft hay beneath.

"No, I ain't," The old dog started. "I ain't nothin' like that young fool of a-"

He broke off as he turned, eyes landing on the pelt of a young fox. Lips peeled back over his teeth, and he snarled, muzzle wrinkling. How had he not recognized that scent? Perhaps he was aging more than he'd thought...

A little red-furred fox kit came bouncing cheerfully towards Melody, a big grin on her muzzle.

“Hi, Melody!” Meadow exclaimed, her fluffy tail swishing. “I gotcha somethin’ for your birthday! Lemme grab it real quick…”

The young fox jumped into the bushes behind her, where she’d hidden the present, and held up a branch with raspberries on it!

“Mama said that I was super lucky ‘ta find these ‘cause it’s almost too late in the year for ‘em to grow an’ stuff,” Meadow said through the branch in her mouth, looking very proud of herself.

She dropped it and smiled at her friend. “Wanna share one? Daddy says that if ya keep ‘em somewhere a lil’ bit cold, they won’t get all yucky so fast!”

“You got me something? Really?” Melody clasped her claws together, and her wings buzzed eagerly. And when Meadow bounded back out with a branch full of raspberries, she made a joyful exclamation and waved both her arms. Raspberries, just in time before summer’s end!

“Yes! Yes,” she agreed. Melody flew straight to one of the berries, landed atop it, and immediately began plucking drupelets from it. “We’ll eat one now, and save the rest somewhere very safe and have more to eat later for a long time!” Though she wouldn’t have any problem with eating supposed yucky berries either. But then she would be eating them alone, and that wouldn’t be fair to her friend!

Once she had an armful, she hopped to a bare stem and beamed. “Thank you for sharing your luck with me, Meadow! You’re very thoughtful.” With that, Melody dug into her delicious gift.

Melody fluttered around Meadow as she explained, observing the vixen, injured and disheveled simply for having tried to do a good deed. The worst of it looked to be that thorn in her paw; even after Meadow pulled it free, her paw didn’t seem to be doing well. Melody kept a worried eye on how she held it off the ground.

“Oh, that’s terrible,” Melody said. “Those nasty bushes!” She flew lazily in the air while she set to thinking. Meadow shouldn’t have to go through all that for nothing but an unhappy father!

“Well, what if I helped pick berries for you?” she suggested. She settled atop Meadow’s muzzle. “Bushes are too big to catch me.”

"This way, @intothemxadows!" The brave mouse charged into the woods with a rapier out and wielded. The duo were on a serious mission for today. That mission? Berry picking! It was the season the leaves started growing and fruits started bearing. Cinnamon spotted a tasty-looking bunch of blueberries growing.

He plucked one out and took a bite. "Hmm! Delicious! Try some, Meadow!"

“Brave? Me?” Melody looked incredulously toward Meadow and may as well have tumbled off the leaf she settled upon. “Gee, I’ve never thought of myself as brave…” She fell silent for a moment, considering what it meant and what she had told the kit about her past.

“I only stood up to our alpha rat—” Conrad, though she avoided calling him by name when she could—“because I thought what he was doing was wrong, hurting others he disagreed with and pushing everyone too hard. It still feels scary thinking about it now. He was much bigger and stronger than me. He was very angry at me, too. But… I did it anyway.” How did she?

It seemed that Meadow had already given her the answer.

“Is that what it means to be brave? Doing what’s right even when it scares you? Even when it’s dangerous to?”
