@intoxthextrees / for thaniel.
the scene starts with a boy walking out of a friend’s home. he’s got a smile painted across his face but a glossy eyed look that screams he’s not in his right mind. he walks as straight as he can but can’t help a few stumbles as he walks down the path and into the driveway where his mother’s car sits parked. he had begged her most of the day to take it and now that he had his license, he was always eager to borrow his parents’ rides.
he’s got liquor on his breath. told his drunk friends that he was fine to drive because he only had a few and it took way more than that to get him wasted. like drinking water he laughed and they let him take the keys to his mother’s car and walk out the door without a second glance. they’re not very good friends, in the end.
the road is quiet and empty, because it’s late and most everyone is asleep by now. but, in cody’s mind, those people don’t know how to have a good time. but, this good time is almost his last.
he can’t quite recall how it happened. maybe he saw something in the road. maybe he dozed off for a second. it’s all a blur in his mind and it ends with the front end of his mother’s car completely smashed against a thick trunked tree, the sound of sirens from a cop and an ambulance parked on the road beside him, and his face bleeding and body sore.
he got lucky, they claim. who knows how long he would have been there if it weren’t for a man finishing a late shift at work and driving past the wreck. it’s amazing he didn’t die and only emerged with a few stitches in his forehead and a cracked rib or two. but, as they toss him in the jail cell and tell him to make his phone call, he keeps those details away.
“ dad? ” he sounds tired and he’s got the tone in his voice that screams he’s done something wrong. “ i... ” what’s he supposed to say? how does he word this in a way that won’t freak his father out? “ you’re gonna be super pissed about this but i... i’m in jail. ” he swallows, hanging his head in shame already. “ i need you to bail me out... ”
