* I’M THE DESIGNER OF MY OWN CATASTROPHE.

intoxthextrees:
“ No, actually. ” He noticed he didn’t have any cards higher than the one she’d put down, so he supposed he was meant to take a new one from the pile, right? She would correct him if he was wrong, so he reached for it. “ I’m from the north. Ever been to the Storm Coast? ”
“ no, but i know where it is on the map. ” she answered while watching his hands as he picked a new card. the boy was catching on that was for sure. “ i here it’s quite secluded and usually always raining. ” not the most ideal place to live ( her hair would frizz up like mad ) but, to each their own she supposed. “ must be heavenly. ”
intoxthextrees:
He took a couple of swigs from his ale and put he cup aside, giving the cards a very brief glance ( because he honestly had no fucking clue what he was doing with them ). “ That’s not vague at all, ” he mused. “ But it’s alright. And not everywhere in Ferelden smells like dog, of that I am sure of. ”
“ and how are you so sure? ” this was another one of her tactics. while he may not have known it, she was being given vital information. he was a country boy with a ( possibly ) rich enough aunt to make it in redcliffe without living in an alienage. “ you must live a bit closer to orlais then, hm? ”
intoxthextrees:
“ I’m beginning to wander if it’s just me or all cities smell like dog. ” Which was saying something, him living with one and all. Which reminded him Alais was waiting for him outside the door and he had better bring her something good to eat when he exited the tavern, or else she would pout the rest of the day. “ Where are you from then, may I ask? ”
“ you’re in ferelden. ” she pointed out. “ everywhere smells like dog. ” she snorted and at this point had completely stopped focusing on the card game. his question, however, had her hesitating slightly. “ i am from ferelden. ” she answered vaguely.
intoxthextrees:
“ Eh, you’re right about that, ” he sighed. It really was unfair and, as Juliette had said, shitty. When he was little, he had many a time heard his mother say how she had hoped things would change for the better after the time of the Inquisition, but seemed it would take more than that, unfortunately. “ So what about you? ” He asked, figuring he’d told enough about himself. “ Are you a local or just wandering? ”
she snorted at the idea of being a local. “ maker, no. ” picking up a new card from the pile, she shuffled it into a better spot in her current hand. “ redcliffe does not like me well enough to accept me into it’s loving arms. ” she set a card down to finish her turn. “ not that i would. the place smells like dog. ”
intoxthextrees:
“ Hey, be fair, ” he rebutted, but there was a very small hint of a grin on the corner of his lips. “ She could also be the owner of the tavern. But no. None of that, or else I would have free food and drinks. ” Not that he was complaining about it, he didn’t visit cities or towns that often so most of the food he ate was grown at home. Or hunted.
“ not to be blunt if your aunt is an elf there’s no way she’s the owner of a tavern in redcliffe. ” there weren’t many successful elves in these parts so unless his aunt was incredibly lucky, she was sure her name wasn’t too high up. the same barmaid that brought cyran his food brought over a pint of ale for juliette. “ which, in my opinion, is shitty but true. ”
intoxthextrees:
“ Just being honest, ” he shrugged. The bread and cheese were gone, so he moved on to the apple that was brought along, leaving the ale for now. “ Visiting relatives, ” he answered simply while picking his cards back up. “ My aunt lives here. Not here as in here in the tavern, of course, ” he jested as an attempt to liven up.
juliette smiled to his first comment. fair enough was all she could really think. “ oh, is that so? ” a small chuckle escaped her at his jest. “ well, that’s good then. because if she lived in the tavern i’d be forced to think that she’s either a drunkard or an entertainer. ”
intoxthextrees:
“ That might be true, ” he agreed before taking another bite. “ I will have to take care not to do that too often. Though I don’t think it would be much of an advantage to have friends that like to rob me whenever I’m not looking………………… ”
“ again, you’ve offended me. ” but given her amusement, she clearly had heard worse. “ what brings you to redcliffe, country boy? ” may as well deter him from his mistrust. “ don’t see many elves around here unless they’ve come from the alienage. ” making a bit of a face at her cards, she discarded one and took a new one. “ and you’re no city elf. ”
intoxthextrees:
“ M-hm, ” he hummed, putting his cards down a moment to break some bread and join it with cheese ( he at least had the sense to face them down against the surface of the table ). He took a bite of his food, chewed thoroughly and washed it down with the ale. “ If you say so. You still will have to forgive me if I don’t immediately trust the first face that smiles at me. ”
“ smart. ” unlike most. that’s exactly how she got some of those noblemen’s coin. the right amount of smiles and honeyed words can take one far in life. “ but you won’t make many friends if you accuse them all of being petty thieves. ”
intoxthextrees:
His heart jumped in his chest when the barmaid leaned down to whisper in his ear after he thanked her for the meal. Caught off guard, he hadn’t expected it! And either way, he wasn’t sure what the whole tip meant, to the point he flushed for being so clueless and ignorant of something that everybody knew about in Redcliffe, though he still nodded in acknowledgement and did as she suggested. “ We’ll see if I have or not, ” he said after gathering his wits and clearing his throat.
“ yes we shall. ” she rose her brows just a bit while looking at her cards. “ but i assure you, cyran, ” she organized her cards a bit. “ that i am not as evil as you think i am. ” glancing up, she caught eye of the barmaid and made a gesture to request a drink. “ i’m merely full of mystery and adventure. ”
intoxthextrees:
Looking over the cards he’d given her, he followed her instructions and picked a number higher than the one she’d laid out, wondering what he should do if he didn’t have such a card. “ Ah, see? ” He arched an eyebrow at her. “ Seems to me you just confessed to stealing and therefore proving that I was right in being suspicious. And if what you say is true, and if you are of humble origins like me, then I have to watch out while in your presence. ” But what made him more suspicious was how easily she was letting him know all of that. Like she was doing it on purpose, leading him on into a false sense of security. Or, again, he was just getting paranoid.
“ you’ve gotten ahead of yourself. ” she laughed a bit and just as that was said, his food and ale was being brought over. the barmaid glanced at his cards and whispered something in cyran’s ear. a tip to take a card from the pile settled next to the cards they’d been placing down so he could advance in the game. “ i never said i stole it. ” she continued once it was just them. “ you assume terrible things about me, ser. ”
intoxthextrees:
To speak the truth, Cyran didn’t really see the appeal of card games. Lyrel had been exposed to them while he was in Skyhold through Dareth’s companions, but he hadn’t really had many chances to play any of them. Since he was already here though, he might as well indulge the woman. “ Hah. One thing I’ve always been told growing up is that innocent people are as frequent as dragons docile as doves. I might be a country boy, but I’m not stupid. ”
“ plucky. ” was merely all she had to say to that with a bit of a smirk to join it. “ oh, trust me, i’ve been around all types. ” she lays a card down. “ i’ve got to say the ones in lesser statuses are definitely the ones to watch out for. ” for a moment she mused over her cards with a gentle hum, right before looking back up to him. “ noblemen think their coin makes them smart. it’s only good for filling my pocket. ”
intoxthextrees:
“ Cyran, ” he introduced himself, just as a barmaid walked up to their table to take his order of a meal and some ale. When she was off, he studied Juliette with slightly narrowed ( and very suspicious ) eyes. “ Is it a habit of yours to invite strangers to play cards in a tavern? ” He asked.
“ yes it is. ” she admitted without hesitance before putting a card down. “ look at your cards, see if you have a number higher than that and put it down. ” distracted for a moment, teaching him how to play the game. “ and is it a habit of yours to look upon a clearly innocent woman with such suspicious looks? ”
intoxthextrees:
She was an insistent one, that was for sure. And she didn’t inspire much confidence, either. But perhaps that was just Cyran being distrustful. Still, he figured he was someone who wasn’t worth robbing, being no better than the poorest of the poor, so he shrugged and had a seat. “ Alright, if you insist. ” The tavern was full and hardly any empty seats anyway. Still, he was going to keep a close eye one her, just in case. “ Got a name I can use or shall I just go ahead and call you the Cards Girl? ”
“ i do insist. ” happily, she glanced down at her cards, studying them well. “ i do have a name. ” she nodded, still looking at her cards before giving him a quick glance. she could go with her actual name or give him the run of the mill fake name she gave almost everyone. but, he didn’t seem like someone who would be hunting her down to drag her back home so -- “ juliette. ” she finally offered. “ and what about you, elf boy? ”
intoxthextrees:
“ I also don’t have any coin, ” he was quick to add, hoping that would deter any stealing tendencies from this character. As previously stated, he was a country boy who didn’t have a lot on him except for the essentials: clothes on his back, some light armor he’d made himself with his father’s help, a dagger without much value and a short bow ( ‘a short bow for a short boy’, people laughed before he decked them ). The most valuable thing he possessed was probably the bead necklace around his neck, and even that only held sentimental value.
“ sure you don’t. ” she chuckled before setting the right amount of cards in the spot she’d indicated him to take and giving herself the same amount. “ now sit. a bar maid will be over shortly to ask what you’d like to eat. may as well pass the time. ” she glanced up at him with a pretty smile ( aside from that chipped tooth she refused to have mended ) and held up her cards. “ have a bit of fun. i’ve no need for your lunch money. ”
intoxthextrees:
Unlike his brother, who was born in a castle ( as he loved to remind him before getting shut down mercilessly ), Cyran was a country boy who was born in the house he currently lived in. He had visited towns before and regularly came to Redcliffe now that he was older to see his aunt Talian, but even so he wasn’t that experienced at dwelling in a city. He was a smart boy with good instincts nonetheless, so things had gone somewhat fine until then. He was confident enough to roam around on his own even, so long as he stayed close to Talian’s house.
He stopped by the tavern to have a quick snack. In fact, his coin purse held only enough for a meal and some ale. When he heard the loud ‘hey!’ and spotted who had called, he pointed at himself in confusion like ‘who me?’, then smiled and shook his head. This was one of the most frequent warnings he got: never gamble anything with anyone in Redcliffe. “ I don’t know how to play cards, ” he explained. “ And either way I’m probably terrible at it. ”
“ yes you. ” she smiled fondly while spreading out a few cards along the table. his answer got him a pretty roll of the eyes. “ sit down. ” she pointed at the chair across from her and pushed it out further for him to have a seat. “ i’ll teach you. ” she smiled wide and ran her thumb across the top of her deck. “ i’m a master of wicked grace. ” she mused. “ while you eat and drink your ale i can teach you all that you need to know. ”
